Comix Friday: Watchmensch, Jamilti and more10:34 am Friday, March 20, 2009by rachel leibold
I did an interview with "Watchmensch's" creator and writer, Rich Johnston, for the March 6 issue of j. The full list of stores that are stocking "Watchmensch" is on the official website. In the Bay Area, it'll be available for $3.99 at Comix Experience, 305 Divisadero St., S.F.; Comics Conspiracy, 115-A E. Fremont Ave., Sunnyvale; and Crush Comics, 2869 Castro Valley Blvd., Castro Valley. ~~~~~~~~~~~ Last night I finally started reading Israeli comic artist Rutu Modan's "Jamilti and Other Stories," a collection of Modan's short comic stories. The book was given to me for my birthday (last October) but has been sitting on my shelf ever since. I only had time to read one story - the eponymous "Jamilti" - but I was instantly drawn in (no pun intended) and can't wait to read the rest. Update in the next Comix Friday... I've also been re-reading Rutu's blog, which she kept for a few months at the New York Times website back in 2007. Each entry is a combination of a hand-written story and comic book-style drawings of an event in Rutu's life. If you haven't been exposed to her work yet, I highly recommend checking it out - especially my favorite, Queen of the Scottish Fairies. ~~~~~~~~~~~ In my last comix-related entry for this blog, I mentioned Santa Rosa artist Vanessa Davis and her comic "Dyspeptic Academic" on Nextbook.org. The following day I got an e-mail from Vanessa telling me that her new comic, "Framed?! Young and restless at the Palm Beach Jewish Film Festival," had just gone up. Nextbook will be publishing one of her comics on the first Friday of every month for the rest of the year. Yay! ~~~~~~~~~~~ The Comix Friday feature will be published in the Art Scene blog every Friday, and will focus on Jewish comic artists and Jewish-themed comix. If you know of anything I should be blogging about in Comix Friday, click here and let me know! Permalink Leave a comment Spread the Word E-mail a friend

Great news: "Watchmensch" is finally here. The 24-page Jewish-themed parody of "Watchmen" arrived in U.S. comic book stores this past Wednesday, so if you're a "Watchmen" fan - or a comic fan in general, in which case you've probably read "Watchmen," and if you haven't, WHY NOT?? - be sure to pick up a copy.
