For a perfect evening, “The Imperfect Garden”1:03 pm Monday, March 16, 2009by rachel leibold
It's sort of last-minute, but if you're not doing anything tomorrow evening, you really should think about heading to the JCC of the East Bay to hear author Adina Sara and photographer Rachel Michaelsen talk about their new book, "The Imperfect Garden." Adina is a columnist for the MacArthur Metro, a monthly community newspaper in Oakland. Over nearly three decades she's been tending to her garden in Oakland's Laurel District, which started out as a "trash heap" and has bloomed into a funky, whimsical, magical sanctuary. The book is a reflection on her gardening experiences through prose and poetry. I interviewed Adina for a feature that will be running in this week's paper, and I highly recommend hearing her speak - she's the kind of person you really want to chat to over a cup of fruit tea and a scone. Adina and Rachel (who took the lovely photos in the book) will present a slide show and reading from "The Imperfect Garden" at 7:30 p.m. ("come at 7:00 pm. to nosh and schmooze") Tuesday, March 17 at JCC of the East Bay, 1414 Walnut St. in Berkeley. Books and cards will be for sale. The event is part of the Aquarian Minyan's monthly author series. Admission will be $10-$20 on a sliding scale, and proceeds benefit the Aquarian Minyan.
