Former camp song leader professes his love for California3:10 pm Tuesday, March 3, 2009by emily savage
There's something amazing happening in the Oakland indie scene right now. Glorious hippie art-folk bands and musicians seem to pop up everywhere — tiny clubs, coffee shops such as Mama Buzz, your friend's lush backyard. One such musician, Mark "Moot" Deutsch, will play his achingly adorable solo songs at the opening of Eliza Fernand's art exhibit at Fort Gallery this Friday, March 6. The exhibit and concert (which include a performance by local indie rockers Blank Tapes) are part of Oakland's monthly gallery crawl Art Murmur. Deutsch, a Reconstructionist Jew raised in Southern California, has worked as a religious school teacher and the song leader at Camp Alonim in the Simi Valley. For his solo project as Moot, Deustch sings loudly and finger-picks his personal tunes on an acoustic guitar. Occasionally he pens a song in Hebrew, or looks to traditional Jewish music as a guide. One of his more memorable songs, an upbeat story of his love for California, includes a sing-along he recordered with his Camp Alonim campers, outside in the wilderness one breezy night.
