Some might find it hard to believe, but the upcoming Jewish Heritage Night with the San Francisco Giants will be the team’s 10th annual.

While no special celebration is planned for the game — 7:15 p.m. Monday, July 28 at AT&T Park against the Pittsburgh Pirates — there will a unique giveaway item this year: a Giants mezuzah.

The event starts with a pre-game party in Seals Plaza beyond center field from 5 to 7 p.m., featuring Jewish musician Saul Kaye and kosher food for purchase (from Dina’s Kosher Catering).

You’ll need a special Jewish heritage ticket to get into the party and to get the free mezuzah. Many Jewish agencies in the Bay Area have purchased blocks of tickets, so it might be best to check with them, as the team is pretty much sold out of its stock of about 2,000.

Groups that have purchased 75 or more tickets this year include Camp Tawonga, Congregations Emanu-El and Sherith Isreal of San Francisco, Kol Shofar of San Rafael and Beth David of Saratoga, the anti–domestic abuse agency Shalom Bayit and the S.F.-based Jewish Community Federation.

The Giants haven’t had any Jewish players on their roster since pitcher Ryan Sadowski in 2009 and outfielder Brian Horwitz in 2008. The Pirates do have a Jewish player, Ike Davis, who was acquired from the New York Mets in an early-season trade. One of 11 Jews in the majors this year, the first baseman came into this week with paltry statistics: a .236 batting average, four home runs and 23 RBIs.

The Giants have a 4-5 record in Jewish heritage games following a 3-1 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers last year, when the souvenir giveaway item was a dreidel. The year before it was a yarmulke, and in 2011 it was a menorah.

For more heritage game information, visit or call (415) 972-2298. Because there isn’t one designated section for heritage night ticket holders, ticket prices vary.

The fourth annual Oakland A’s Jewish Heritage Night is slated for 7:05 p.m. Aug. 19 against the New York Mets. For more information, visit or call (510) 563-2205. — j. staff
