Two pre-state Israel exhibits — “Elia Kahvedjian: The Invisible Photographer” and “To Build and Be Built: Kibbutz History” — open Monday, July 14 at the Osher Marin JCC in San Rafael. Both are free.

Kahvedjian, an Armenian photographer who narrowly escaped death during the Armenian genocide in Turkey, moved to pre-state Israel where his camera captured interesting scenes that depict the history and culture of the land. The exhibit features photographs taken as early as 1924.

“To Build and Be Built: Kibbutz History,” on loan from the Contemporary Jewish Museum, provides an overview of the kibbutz movement, particularly the vital role of kibbutzim in the social structure of Israel before 1948. Despite the decline of kibbutzim in modern Israel, the legacy of social experimentation continues to inspire young leaders today.

The JCC is at 200 N. San Pedro Road. For more information, go to http://www.marinjcc.org.
