Shawn’s Kugel, featuring Shawn Weaver, will play at the Friday, April 18, Shabbat services at Congregation Emanu-El in San Francisco. If you miss him, visit his website and also pick up a recipe for enchiladas, lasagna, or — of course — kugel. (“Add broth and egg yolks. Mix in eggwhites. Season and dance a quick hora around the kitchen … ”) HYIM fans can see him on Monday, April 21, at Yoshi’s Oakland and also support the fund he set up in memory of his mother, the Arlene Shmaeff Memorial Education Fund. Shmaeff was a member of Kehilla Community Synagogue … Neshama Carlebach and Josh Nelson have been added to the roster of teachers and entertainers at Limmud Bay Area, slated for July 13-14 in Sonoma. Time magazine recently called Nelson “a star of New Jewish Music” and Carlebach is a musician and the daughter of musician-spiritual leader Shlomo Carlebach.
Max Sarosi, a Brandeis Hillel Day School–Marin sixth-grader, his entire class, plus student council representative and eighth-grader Emma Wall were among 16,000 youth from 400 California schools who were recognized for their social action efforts at We Day, an event to inspire children to become global citizens, at Oakland’s Oracle Arena on March 26. The BHDS sixth-graders sold organic and gluten-free baked goods and rainbow bracelets — all hand prepared — at two Mill Valley markets and raised $1,935 to help build a school in Nicaragua. “The We Day event was the highlight of the entire experience,” says Marc Sarosi, who joined his son Max at the event.
Short shortsFormer Facebook exec and current Congregation Beth Am member Randi Zuckerberg had a dream come true when she appeared on Broadway in the musical “Rock of Ages” in March. Besides heading Zuckerberg Media and authoring a best-selling book, Zuckerberg sings in a band called Feedbomb. She’ll be the speaker at the S.F.-based Jewish Community Federation’s Business Leadership Council breakfast, honoring philanthropist and venture capitalist Bobby Lent, on May 14 … San Franciscans Dara Papo and Sam Goldman are the new co-chairs of that federation’s LGBT Alliance Advisory Committee. They succeed Arthur Slepian, who will be the vice chair of the federation’s Israel and Global Committee. Papo and Goldman, along with Katherine Tick, JCF’s leadership development director, and David Robinson, Bay Area Keshet director, will be guests on KPIX-TV’s Mosaic airing at 5 a.m., Sunday, April 27.
