The Marin campus of Brandeis Hillel Day School — which will become an independent school at the start of the 2015-16 school year — has named Peg Sandel its new head of campus.

Sandel is currently the dean of Jewish studies and Hebrew at the Jewish Community High School of the Bay in San Francisco. She will assume her new position at the K-8 Jewish day school on July 1.

Sandel will oversee BHDS Marin as it splits off from BHDS San Francisco and becomes a separate school.

“We are confident that this transition will be well stewarded under Dr. Sandel’s vision and strong leadership abilities,” Lily Kanter said in a press release. Kanter represented Marin parents and community members in the interview process. “[Sandel is] a consummate independent-school professional.”

Sandel, 45, earned a doctorate in Jewish studies from U.C. Berkeley and the Graduate Theological Union. She has a master’s degree in Jewish studies from the GTU, and an undergraduate degree in religious studies from U.C. Santa Barbara.

A resident of Berkeley, she has nearly two decades of service to the Bay Area Jewish community, including teaching adult education classes at venues such as Congregation Netivot Shalom in Berkeley. She was also a lecturer in Jewish studies at San Francisco State University.
