The S.F.-based Israeli consulate announced this week that the Israeli Peace Team will play an exhibition men’s soccer match June 5 in Larkspur.
The 6 p.m. game at Redwood High School will be hosted by the Real Marin Soccer Club.
The Israeli Peace Team is an over-35 squad composed of former professional players and some former players from Israel’s national team. The team includes Israelis of Jewish, Islamic, Christian and Druze heritage.
One of the big names on the roster is the head coach, Rifaat “Jimmy” Turk, 58, the first Israeli Arab to play for the Israeli national team. He also played for Israel in the 1976 Summer Olympics and went on to forge a political career, getting elected deputy mayor of Tel Aviv in 2003.
The Israel Peace Team is on a U.S. tour to promote a peaceful resolution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The Real Marin club is composed of players in their 40s and 50s, many of whom played for Cal, Stanford, USF and other colleges. The over-40 club has won league titles, tournament titles and even one national age-group championship. The team’s name is taken from the famous Spanish club Real Madrid.
Tickets are free. Redwood High School is located at 395 Doherty Drive in Larkspur. For more information, call the Consulate General of Israel at (415) 844-7500.
