They will succeed Senior Rabbi Stephen Pearce, who will retire this summer after 20 years but will remain as senior rabbi emeritus. The Singers are expected to assume their duties at the San Francisco synagogue in the late summer or early fall.

Chosen after a yearlong national search, the couple currently serve as co-senior rabbis at Temple Beth Am in Seattle, where they are credited with the congregation’s growth from 375 to 900 members.

Emanu-El, which has 2,080 member families, is the largest Reform synagogue in Northern California.

“During the search process, it became clear that the best candidate was not a single individual but was instead an extraordinarily talented team of two,” Emanu-El board president Steven Dinkelspiel wrote in an announcement to members.

The Singers were ordained by Hebrew Union College–Jewish Institute of Religion in 1989. They are married and have three children.
