Fabulous Fammys

U.S. Rep. Jared Huffman (D-North Coast), in town from Washington, D.C., seemed as comfortable and familiar with the Hebrew words of the motzi “as any landsman (or woman),” an inside source reported from the Fammy Awards, Jewish Family and Children’s Services’ gala event. The not-Jewish Huffman and JFCS board president Nancy Goldberg did a “stellar job” leading more than 500 friends and supporters in the prayer over bread at the 29th annual Fammys on March 9 at San Francisco’s Ritz-Carlton.

Other politicos joining the festivities included state Sen. Mark Leno; state Assembly members Marc Levine and Paul Fong; San Francisco Supervisors Malia Cohen, Eric Mar and Scott Wiener; and Israel Consul General to the Pacific Northwest Andy David. The event raised more than $1 million to support services for the community. Gala chairs were Jim and Sally Shapiro, overall chairs; Daryl Messinger and Jim Heeger, South Peninsula; Deborah and Craig Hoffman, North Peninsula; Barbara and Ron Kaufman, San Francisco; Karen Pell and Heather Lupa, Marin; and Marlene and Martin Stein, Sonoma.

Reigning supreme

Barbara Moser, a family law attorney in San Francisco, and her husband, David Moser, an environmental lawyer, were sworn into the Supreme Court bar last month in Washington, D.C. They are now able to appear before the court and make use of its resources. Jeremy and Josh Moser flew in from college to participate in the festivities, which included a meeting with Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. The elder Mosers are members of Hadassah’s National Center for Attorneys Council, which partners with other groups on shared advocacy issues. Barbara Moser credits Lynn Altshuler, a local attorney who was sworn into the Supreme Court bar many years ago, for her inspiration and motivation.

Beat malaria — and the Jazz

Curt Mandell writes that Temple Israel Men’s Club in Alameda is teaming up with the Golden State Warriors to fight malaria in Africa through Nothing But Nets. It goes like this … go to the game on April 7 and watch the Warriors play — and hopefully beat — the Utah Jazz while you support a great cause. Ten dollars from each ticket sold will purchase anti-malarial nets that will be distributed in Africa by Unicef. Richard Hart and Dan McClosky of Temple Sinai in Oakland, organizers of the Holiday Dinner Drive in December, report that 20 participating congregations raised a record $105,000 for local food banks. Since the program’s inception in 2000, $850,000 has been raised. As a result, writes Hart, “The Jewish community as a whole is seen as a key partner in alleviating the basic need of people we see on our local streets.” … Alan Schechner of San Rafael has released “The Art of Transcribing, Drum Set–Book 2.” It includes downloadable MP3 files. Visit http://www.alanschechner.com … Three seventh-graders from Wornick Jewish Day School in Foster City were winners in the San Mateo STEM Fair (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) and will go on to the next level of competition. Placing second were Zachary Berger in the earth/space division and Joseph Blinder in the biological division. David Lipman placed first in physical science and also received an award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.
