Follow j. on   and

A handful of Bay Area congregations have signed up to participate in Shabbat Across America, joining hundreds of synagogues across the United States. The 17th annual event is scheduled for March 1.

Sponsored by the 25-year-old National Jewish Outreach Program, the Shabbat program cuts across all denominations and affiliations and is designed, in part, to welcome new people to synagogues.

Local participants include Chabad of the East Bay (Berkeley), Temple Beth Sholom (San Leandro), Temple Beth Hillel (Richmond), Congregation B’nai Shalom (Walnut Creek), Congregations Ner Tamid and Chevra Thilim (San Francisco) and Congregation Shir Hadash (Los Gatos).

For information and a full list of participating synagogues, visit www. or call (888) SHABBAT (742-2228).
