Syrian tanks breach Golan Heights

Follow j. on   and

Three Syrian tanks entered the demilitarized zone between Israel and Syria in the Golan Heights and remained there for several hours on Nov. 3.

The Israel Defense Forces filed a complaint with the U.N.’s Disengagement Force in the Golan Heights over the violation of the longstanding cease-fire agreement between Israel and Syria.

The breaching of the agreement is viewed by the Israeli military as related to the current unrest in Syria and not a move against Israel. Still, the IDF raised its alert level in the Golan Heights.

Last month, the IDF evacuated the Mount Hermon tourist area after Syrians carrying weapons marched toward the border. The Syrians, believed to be rebels, did not breach the demilitarized zone border. — jta
