The Jewish Federation of the East Bay will be highlighting the projects it supports in Israel — as well as officially welcoming the region’s new Israeli consul general, Andy David — at “Mishpacha: An Evening to Celebrate Our Israel Connections,” a dessert reception set for Monday, Nov. 5 at Temple Sinai in Oakland.

David took over as consul general in August, replacing Akiva Tor after his four-year term ended. David and his staff are based in San Francisco, but the consulate’s Pacific Northwest Region covers all of Northern California and five states.

Gilad Perry, co-founder of the pioneering Kibbutz Eshbal in Israel, will also take part in the 90-minute event.

Founded in 1997 in the Western Galilee, Kibbutz Eshbal espouses the values of the Dror Israel movement, which stresses social justice and cooperation between Israel’s Jews and Arabs. Many of the kibbutz residents are at-risk youth from the country’s Ethiopian and Russian communities. The East Bay federation gives financial and other support to the kibbutz and the work of the Dror Israel movement.

In addition, the event will include speakers giving an update on the April 2013 East Bay Community Trip to Israel, which will be one of the largest Israel missions ever undertaken from the area. There will also be a presentation about Birthright Israel and its impact on Jewish young adults in the East Bay, and stories from an East Bay delegation that recently participated in a rescue operation bringing Ethiopian Jews to Israel.

The event will begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 5 at Temple Sinai, 2808 Summit St., Oakland. It is free, but RSVP is required. For information, visit, call (510) 318-6467 or email .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address).
