Funds from pie sale to help cancer program

The fourth annual Sharsheret “Pies for Prevention” Thanksgiving Bake Sale is now under way in Palo Alto, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the national nonprofit’s Stephanie Sussman and Ann Nadrich Memorial Fund and ovarian cancer prevention program. Five varieties of pies are available for $20 each, and the deadline for orders is Nov. 9.

New Jersey–based sisters Sharon Wieder and Adeena Sussman started the bake sale in 2008, in honor of their mother and grandmother, who both died of ovarian cancer. Wieder got involved with Sharsharet, an organization that helps Jewish families cope with cancer, after her own treatment for breast cancer. The holiday sale now takes place annually in nine cities across the country.

Pies can be picked up on the evening of Nov. 21 at the home of the Palo Alto coordinator. In addition to ordering pies, people can sign up to sponsor a volunteer baker, paying for all ingredients out of their own pockets.
