Spotlight on Education: Multicultural school with impressive values

A diverse community

When you come to South Peninsula Hebrew Day School in Sunnyvale for the first time, bring your passport. You’ll hear French, Farsi, English and Russian in the hallways and a hefty dose of Hebrew on the playground.

The mix of languages and cultures is part of SPHDS’ legacy. In our early childhood program, children are immersed in both Hebrew and English on a daily basis. In elementary grades, the day splits evenly between English and Jewish studies. This incredibly rich program challenges kids and supports sophisticated thinking.

Creative thinking

Looking at SPHDS’ Gan Aviv preschool for your child 2-5 years old? Come ready to get messy. Gan Aviv’s newly expanded curriculum incorporates an “open-ended materials” approach. Developed with training from Stanford University’s Bing Institute, Gan Aviv’s open-ended materials program fosters the growth of fine motor skills, risk taking and creative thinking.

In elementary grades, Singapore Mathematics anchors the Lower School curriculum. “Children learn to think about how math concepts work before they start writing equations. That gives them an edge on the competition for life,” says Dr. Selis.

In middle school, SPHDS is surprisingly intimate, offering four levels of math and science in grades 6-8. Fall electives include a leadership seminar, robotics/

engineering workshop and advanced literature circle.

Core values

Students at SPHDS learn to think about their interactions within the framework of strong Jewish values. Shalom — keeping peace, Kavod — showing respect for others, and Aharayut — taking personal responsibility are core concepts that repeat throughout the year.

Join us for our Kindergarten Open House October 21 and December 16 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

SPHDS offers a traditional Jewish education with a strong focus on Hebrew language for children ages 24 months through eighth grade. Please reach us at .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) and http://www.sphds.org.
