Palestinians decry Spanish team’s medal to Shalit

Follow j. on   and

Palestinian groups are calling on Arab sports and soccer unions to protest a Spanish soccer club’s invitation to Israeli former captive Gilad Shalit.

The Catalan soccer team has invited Shalit to be its guest of honor at the Oct. 7 Super Clasico match against Real Madrid, where he will receive a medal, according to Ynet.

In response, the Palestinian media called on Arab sports and soccer groups to protest while Hamas announced a media boycott of Barcelona soccer teams, which are popular with Pal-estinians.

No TV station in Gaza will broadcast Barcelona matches and no newspapers in Gaza will write about the clubs, Hamas official Attallah Abu Al Subah said on Sept. 27, according to Ynet. — jta

Homage to Catalonia

Thanks and congratulations to Barcelona and its football team!  Now that football players have shown that they have some moral intelligence and clarity, maybe the European press and academia can follow suit?
