Passed away in her sleep on September 16, 2012, in Princeton, New Jersey, just weeks before her 99th birthday.
Anne and her husband, Israel, were active members of Congregation Beth El in Minneapolis before moving to San Francisco in 1948. Anne continued to be involved with the Jewish community, serving leadership roles in Congregation Beth Sholom’s Sisterhood, Hadassah and Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. She was National President of Women’s League in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
A talented pianist, Anne accompanied many noted soloists and provided the entertainment for countless Jewish organizational events. She also was an accomplished artist, although she did not begin painting until she was in her 60s. (She studied for several years with noted still-life artist Al Proom). She was also an outstanding orator and writer.
Anne Steinberg is survived by her children: Sherna (Jonny) Kisilevitz of Ein Kerem, Israel; Elliot (Carolyn) of Belvedere, California; Linda of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and Judith (Bernard) Fleitman of Princeton, New Jersey; a brother, Dr. Martin Segal, sister-in-law Shelley Segal of Minneapolis, Minnesota, and sister-in-law Betty Segal of Baltimore; nine grandchildren (Michal, Rona, Tamar and Shua Kisilevitz, Merav (Einan) Gardi, Aviva (Dan) Rosenthal, Adam Steinberg, and Jessica and Dana Fleitman) and great-grandchildren (Omri, Lotem and Shlomit Gardi, Sadie and Stella Rosenthal and Avigail and Ben Kisilevitz).
Special thanks and appreciation are extended to Judi Fleitman and her family for their efforts and dedication as Anne’s primary caretakers for so many years.
Anne was the consummate Eshet Chayil — a Woman of Valor.
Anne was buried at a family gravesite service next to her beloved husband, Israel, in the Beth Sholom area of Home of Peace Cemetery, Colma, on Thursday, September 20, 2012. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to American Friends of Tel Aviv University, Hadassah or a charity of your choice.
