Crematory averted outside Nazi camp

The mayor of Lublin, Poland, introduced a resolution that would prevent the construction of a commercial crematory in the area surrounding the former Majdanek Nazi camp.

Mayor Krzysztof Zuk offered the resolution to the City Council that would designate the area as protected.

The Polish funeral company Styks had plans to build a crematory near the former camp. In late August, the Anti-Defamation League sent a letter to Zuk asking him to block the idea “in remembrance for the victims of the Holocaust.”

More than 75,000 people were murdered at Majdanek, which is now a state Holocaust memorial and museum. — jta
