Grown-ups can go back to school, too, via Lehrhaus

Beginning and Intermediate Modern Hebrew classes, instructed by Michal Dramen, also will convene in nine sessions each on Monday, Oct. 6. The beginning class will meet at 7 p.m., the intermediate class at 8 p.m. Tuition is $70 each for members, $85 for non-members.

For students interested in preparing for the Bay Area's International Jewish Writers Conference Feb. 1-3, Lehrhaus will offer three 7:30 p.m. literature classes.

Irving Halperin, San Francisco State University professor emeritus, will teach "Phillip Roth: His Transformation from `Portnoy's Complaint' to `Patrimony,'" Thursday, Oct. 30.

Chana Bloch, Mills College professor of literature, will address "The Art of Translation, Ancient and Modern Poetry: The Song of Songs and Yehuda Amichai" on Thursday, Nov. 13.

Joyce Penn Moser, Stanford University dean of the program in writing and critical thinking, will speak on "Jewish Writers and Writing Today: Chaim Potok, Cynthia Ozick and Tony Kushner" Thursday, Nov. 20.

Cost for all three sessions is $30 for members, $35 for non-members.

Five classes on "Jewish Spirituality as Expressed Through Film" will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7. Hana Matt, Graduate Theological Union adjunct faculty member, will screen such films as "The Revolt of Job," "A Stranger Among Us" and "Crossing Delancey." Tuition is $40 for members, $50 for non-members.

Matt also will teach "Living Waters: Rediscovering and Reframing Mikveh," a three-session class that begins at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 30. Cost is $25 for members, $35 for non-members.

A four-session class on "Jewish Art and Artists in the Modern World" with Sheila Braufman, Judah L. Magnes Museum curator of painting and sculpture, will begin at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 13. It will conclude with a docent-led tour of the Magnes at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5. Cost is $35 for members, $40 for non-members.

Rabbi Lavey Derby of Congregation Kol Shofar will teach an eight-week class on "Discovering Judaism" beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29. Cost is $55 for members, $70 for non-members.

Shabbat Lunch and Learn classes on history and current issues will continue at 1 p.m. Friday, Sept. 26 with Jeannette Kadesh speaking on "The Pros and the Cons of Growing Older."

Deborah Madison will talk on "Great Chefs" Oct. 10; Helene Zynstein will address "Shabbat Dance in the Sukkah" Oct. 17; Dr. Michael Thaler will speak on "Medical Ethics Today" Oct. 24 and Ken Cohen will talk on "Ancient Israel at 50" Oct. 31.
