J. staffers have won three national Rockower Awards from the American Jewish Press Association.

Art director Cathleen Maclearie won first place for photography for “Clothes Make the Mensch,” j.’s Feb. 17, 2011 cover story about the Pivnick family, longtime owners of San Francisco’s Cable Car Clothiers.

Maclearie’s art and production department picked up a second-place award for overall graphic design among newspapers with a circulation greater than 15,000.

And editor Sue Fishkoff won a second-place award for magazine feature writing for “O Israel, for Those Who Don’t Hear,” a December 2011 piece in Hadassah Magazine about outreach to the Jewish deaf.

The Simon Rockower Awards have recognized excellence in the North American Jewish media for the past 31 years. This year’s awards were announced June 13 in Philadelphia during the AJPA’s annual conference.
