Hadassah probes top officials on allegations of misusing funds

Two top Hadassah officials are being investigated by the organization for possible misuse of funds.

The probe was launched after board members of Hadassah, the Women’s Zionist Organization of America, were sent a letter Jan. 12 by the organization’s chief operating officer, Larry Blum, alleging that Hadassah national president Marcie Natan and former national president Nancy Falchuk had used organizational assets for personal use.

“Never have I ever been ashamed to say ‘I worked for Hadassah’ until now,” Blum wrote in his letter. “Individuals’ interests have been put ahead of mission and politics have replaced Jewish Values.”

Blum has been on administrative leave since last fall following allegations that he had misused his corporate credit card. In his letter, Blum denied the allegations against him.

Blum alleged that Natan, who was treasurer until she became Hadassah’s president last summer, approved flight upgrades and extra hotel expenditures in Israel for Hadassah board members who supported her candidacy for president. He also alleged that Falchuk used a corporate credit card for entertainment and personal trips to Florida and moved “furniture and fixtures” valued at $10,000 to $20,000 from Hadassah’s corporate apartment to her own home without the approval of senior leadership.

Through a spokesman Natan declined to comment, and Falchuk did not return calls seeking comment.

In a statement, Hadassah said that it had retained an external, independent investigator to look into Blum’s allegations. It also said that the probe of Blum’s use of his corporate credit card continues.

“We welcome this review and we are confident that the committee has in place a sensible and fair process for reaching a conclusion as to the allegations,” Natan and Falchuk wrote in a letter to Hadassah board members. “We ask for everyone’s patience during this time.” — jta

Anyone who knows these women

Anyone who knows these women knows their integrity and devotion to an organization that they have loved and worked for most of their adult life.  Get real!

Marcie Natan and Nancy Falchuk

Marcie Natan and Nancy Falchuk have worked tirelessly for Hadassah and are generous donors to the organization.  These allegations were made by a disgruntled employee after he was placed on administrative leave for misuse of a credit card

These women are exemplars of Jewish Values! Shame on  Larry Blum for spreading perfidious lies about Marcie Natan and Nancy Falchuk! How stupid must one be to even entertain the notion that Nancy or Marcie would take charitable funds? These Presidents would never take from Hadassah: each has given hundreds of thousands if not millions to promote the health and education of so many who desperately need their help! These women sacrifice years of their lives in service of hospitals and colleges and foundations that make up the beating heart of the only true democracy in the Middle East and the only Jewish country in the world! Whilst the private sector squanders the hard-earned wages of many innocent people, Nancy Falchuk stands as a beacon of giving in a night of financial mismanagement and greed! She is the reason why Hadassah still exists even after $45 MILLION dollars were clawed back from this beautiful organization! These women are the teachers, nurses, academics, doctors and professionals who have made it possible for women to work in this day and age! The Forward should certainly know better than to dig up mean-spirited quotes from ex-employees and publish them as if such statements were representative of a 300,000 person organization! It’s just cruel and stupid to do that! All of this started when Larry Blum started slipping fallacious notes with these absurd claims underneath the doors of board members. Now does that seem like what a “whistle-blower” who has the best interest of Hadassah at heart do? This man worked for Crazy Eddie’s. He was angry at and going to serve papers to the organization. Who on Earth would believe what he would be saying about Marcie and Nancy? And anyone who looks into these outrageous allegations knows that Marcie Natan had no authority to compensate people who supported her presidential candidacy; she was not the treasurer during the timeframe in question! How can anyone trust an article that does not even get the name of the Women’s Zionist Organization of America correct? What they have written is slanderous, libelous and not just sloppy journalism but downright malicious! If you read only one sentence of what I here write let it be that you remember to support these women who have made Israel and so much more possible for 100 years. In her acceptance speech, Marcie Natan said “Hineni”—I am here—this is a dark time. Let us stand with this outstanding group of women as they continue to recruit the best forensics and independent observers to sort out this situation and let us applaud these women for handling these laughably ridiculous charges with so much more professionalism and grace than they merit.
