Susan Greenwald

Susan Greenwald left this world in the early hours of Jan. 6, 2012. Susan was born on March 18, 1925 in Mukachevo, then part of Czechoslovakia.

Susan had dreams of becoming a journalist. Her dream was interrupted by the brutal invasion of Nazi Germany. Susan survived several concentration camps and returned home to Mukachevo, which became part of the Soviet Union after WWII. Shortly after, she met her husband. Later they had two children. In the late 1960s, the family immigrated to the U.S., where Susan worked in banking. Susan enjoyed traveling, walking, movies, museums and was an avid reader.

In later years, she spoke about the Holocaust and educated the young generation about her experiences inspiring them to fight prejudice and intolerance. Susan will be missed by her daughters, Eva BarShalom and Rita Clancy, and grandchildren, Mike, Sasha and Dwight, and sons-in-law, Yaakov and Pat.

Donations in Susan’s memory can be made to JFCS East Bay Holocaust Services Program, 2484 Shattuck Ave., Suite 210, Berkeley, CA 94704, attn. Lynn Simon; or Caring Hands, a program of John Muir Health, 2855 Mitchell Drive, Suite 100, Walnut Creek, CA 94598. Services were held.
