Shopping for a Change, a San Mateo–based nonprofit website that helps local charities and global artisans from impoverished areas raise money in a mutually beneficial partnership, will hold a trunk show Saturday, Nov. 5 at the Oshman Family JCC in Palo Alto.
The event, from 5 to 8 p.m., will include appetizers, wine and items for sale including apparel, accessories, jewelry and home décor, all created by indigenous artisans.
Shopping for a Change, established a year ago by multimedia artist Stacey Horowitz, directs half of net proceeds from online sales to help fund projects in artisan communities around the world, such as providing clean drinking water and improving education and health care. Another part of the profit goes to a partnering U.S.-based charity.
In the Bay Area, partners include Peninsula Sinai Congregation, Kehillah Jewish High School and Ronald C. Wornick Jewish Day School.
In its first year of sales, Shopping for a Change helped to fund the Tibane Water Project to bring clean water to 400 people in Swaziland, Africa.
The Oshman Family JCC is located at 3921 Fabian Way, Palo Alto. For information, visit www.shoppingforachange.org or call (650) 488-7088.
