The common good

Daniel Lurie, CEO and founder of Tipping Point Community, will receive the University of San Francisco’s 2011 USF California Prize for Service and the Common Good at a sold-out event on Nov. 1. The prize, which comes with a $10,000 award, is presented to an organization or individual that models selfless service in pursuit of the common good,

particularly that which benefits the state’s marginalized populations.

Lurie, of San Francisco, “has worked diligently on behalf of the poor to find the best organizations serving low-income families in the Bay Area and give them the dollars and support needed to realize their full potential,” said Anne-Marie Devine, senior director of media relations at USF. The joy of life

As j. goes to press, Sam Saddik of Burlingame is running from Sausalito to Inverness in honor and memory of his father, Michael Saddik, who died of liver cancer in February 2009. “One of the most important things my father conveyed to me throughout my life with him was the importance of eating healthy and getting regular exercise,” Saddik writes on his blog, http://www.trailsfordad.blogspot.com.

Sam planned to start his four-day run Oct. 26 at sea level in Sausalito, continue up 8,000-foot Mount Tam and then travel down to Inverness, where he’ll finish Sunday, Oct. 30. He notes that any funds he raises to support his run, which he’s named Joie de Vivre (Joy of Life), will be donated to Second Opinion, a nonprofit that helped his dad throughout his illness.

 

The ‘oy’ of technology

When Marc Press, president of Congregation Rodef Sholom, spoke at Erev Rosh Hashanah services, he talked about community and particularly the moral support his family received when their son Casey was in the hospital. He spent each night with Casey, and each night he received emails wishing them well and often saying good night, or “lilah tov.” Unless, he quipped, the sender had an iPhone. In that case, thanks to the joys of technology, the message was automatically “corrected” to “lilac tov.”

Dr. Janice Schwartz, director of the Jewish Home of San Francisco Center for Research on Aging, has been named winner of the 2012 American Society for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics’ William B. Abrams Award in Geriatric Clinical Pharmacology. ASCPT focuses on improving the understanding and use of existing drug therapies and developing safer and more effective treatments … San Jose’s Congregation Sinai will celebrate the installation of new solar panels, a three-year effort initiated by twins Dani and Rachel Steinberg and their b’nai mitzvah class in 2008. The event, at noon on Nov. 6, will include a ribbon-cutting ceremony, luncheon and social action program.

Rabbi Yosef Levin writes that his (and Dena’s) son Rabbi Zalman Levin (along with wife Devory and baby Mushka) will move from Brooklyn to Palo Alto, where he will join his father at the newly named Bais Menachem–Chabad in Palo Alto. The younger Levin will be assistant rabbi and program director, and the elder will “continue running and building the larger organization.” … In other Chabad news, Rabbi Nosson Potash of Chabad of Cole Valley reports that a sukkah on wheels, sponsored by Michelle and Avraham-Yehuda Ambalo and the Mi Yu Foundation, was spotted on the streets of San Francisco “sharing the beautiful message of unity” of the holiday.
