Netanyahu snubs Woolsey, four other House members

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu this week turned down a request to meet with a congressional delegation that was visiting Israel under J Street auspices.

Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D–Marin and Sonoma) was one of five members of Congress who participated in the weeklong trip, which was to conclude June 10.

“I’m disappointed that the prime minister chose not to meet with the J Street delegation,” Woolsey said in a written statement. “All of us could have benefited from a frank discussion about the peace process.  We were curious to hear his perspective, and it’s important that the prime minister understand the concerns of the U.S. constituencies we represent. It was a missed opportunity.”

Jeremy Ben-Ami, who directs the self-described “pro-Israel, pro-peace” J Street, confirmed June 6 that the prime minister and other senior government officials refused to meet with the five-member delegation.

A congressional delegation of (from left) Reps. John Yarmuth, Betty McCollum, Lynn Woolsey, Steve Cohen and Sam Farr visits the Knesset this week.
“I just don’t really understand what would be in Israel’s interest to refuse to meet with members of Congress who are year in and year out supporters,” Ben-Ami said. “Why would one not welcome them when the greatest threat to Israel’s safety is growing international isolation?”

Ynetnews.com reported that Israel’s Foreign Ministry said the delegation did not submit a formal request and that there were scheduling conflicts.

Multiple calls from JTA to the Israeli embassy in Washington were not returned.

The group was hoping to meet with Miki Eitan, a second-tier minister, and also had meetings scheduled with opposition figures and top Palestinian Authority officials. The Egypt leg of the tour was to include visits with top officials of that country.

Last year, a J Street congressional delegation was similarly snubbed. This year’s delegation was composed of Reps. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn.), Sam Farr (D-Carmel), Betty McCollum (D-Minn.), John Yarmuth (D-Ken.) and Woolsey, whose district includes Marin County and a big chunk of Sonoma County. Cohen and Yarmuth are Jewish.

“As members of Congress who care deeply about the survival of a strong and vibrant Israel, we have been very pleased to meet with a broad array of Israeli leaders,” Cohen told Ynetnews. “Unfortunately, the Israeli prime minister and other senior ministers were not among them, which would have been appropriate and proper.”

J Street has had a contentious relationship with Netanyahu’s government and its envoy in Washington, Michael Oren. The group has been critical of Netanyahu’s policies and advocates for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Israeli government wanted little to do with the group as long as its support of Iran sanctions and its opposition to a U.N. investigation charging Israel with war crimes was not ironclad. Once J Street clarified its positions on those issues in early 2010, the relationship improved.

However, the relationship deteriorated again after J Street urged the Obama administration earlier this year not to veto a U.N. Security Resolution blasting Israel for its settlement building.

The congressional visit came on the heels of Netanyahu’s trip to the United States last month, when he spoke at the AIPAC policy conference in Washington and was enthusiastically received at a speech to both houses of Congress.

Mr. Netanyahu's lack of savvy

Considering Israel’s increasing isolation in the world one would think the country needs as much support as possible. That’s what makes it hard to understand Mr. Netanyahu’s cavalier treatment of the six Congress members.  It’s easy to understand that Mr. Netanyahu is not happy with J Street and its positions. As a matter of fact, he is not alone in that and many members of the Jewish community object to the misguided positions adopted by this organization. But this is more of a reason to meet with the J Street sponsored Congress delegation to explain Israel’s position and to try to influence them. Ignoring them and refusing to meet with them can only help solidify their positions. If Mr. Netanyahu believes he only needs to meet with GOP members and Fox News anchormen, he is not helping Israel and demonstrates a lack of savvy that is surprising in a person who was Israel’s Ambassador to the UN.

Which does Screen Name "i-care" Stand For?

i-care only for the Palestinians or i-care for Hamas’ call for Jewish destruction?

i-care, a majority of US Jews oppose the overall J Street stance on Israel and are appalled that it invited BDS scum to its national convention.

And the vast majority of Israelis-not just Netanyahu’s Likud Party-see J Street as an enemy of Israel. As do most American Jews.

Moreover, J Street lied and only when caught in its untruth, had to acknowledge taking millions of dollars from the openly anti-Israel billionaire George Soros.

Given J Street’s anti-Israel, pro-Palestinian perspective, why should any Israeli government be receptive tro meeting with some of J Street’s “convenient idiots?”

Not a good idea

Israel needs all the friends that it can get and for Netanyahu to snub these members of Congress just may backfire on him and on Israel.

I know people like Dan Spitzer have no desire for a just solution to the Israel/Palestine conflict. I am sure someone like Soitzer would be happy to see all the Palestinians driven from the occupied territories so that Jews could take over their homes and lands..

J Street is far more of a friend to Israel than is AIPAC a group that has never criticized Israel for its oppression of the Palestinians, for the building of the illegal settlements, for thwarting a peaceful end to this conflict.

AIPAC should long ago have been registered as an agent of a foreign power as it is quite evident that although they use the word “American” in the name they put Israeli interests above those of America.

Maybe it is time for these snubbed members of Congress to speak out on the floor of Congress about their experiences with AIPAC. I suspect that if they were able to tell the truth it might shake up some people.

I also suspect that the foul mouthed Dan Spitzer will come up with one of his usual vile retorts..

A good idea

This congressional delegation should have traveled under the auspices of the State Dept., not J-Street. Using normal channels is there anyone they couldn’t have met or information gathered? Of course not, rather they used “Mavi Maramara” tactics to give cover to J-Street, so srew them. Besides, it Lynn Woolsey, who needs an excuse to avoid her?

Which brings up the question - why in the hell did the Federation invite J-Street to have a booth at “Israel in the Gardens”? Yes we have a “big tent” but every tent has walls.

Janice supports BDS and the Single (Palestinian majority) State

So given her manifest biases, she should be ignored.

I will say that her ignorance knows no bounds. And that includes what she believes to be my opinion.

I have NEVER said the Palestinians should be driven from the West Bank and Gaza. In fact, I do believe that the Palestinians should one day have their own state, so long as Israel is tendered defensible borders and Ham-Ass is not part of the Palestinian government.

So Jan-Nutt has still not be cured from her delusions and paranoia. She certainly is no friend of Israel and were her opinions followed, Israel would have a Palestinian majority and we would thus see the end of the Jewish State as we know it. For Jan-Nutt, that would be just fine.

Jan-Nutt, why do you come on to this site? To join fellow morons such as your JVP and ISM fellow haters in attempting to harass the vast majority of Jews in this community? Is your life so devoid of meaning that you have nothing better to do with your time?

Please slink back into the slime of sewage from whence you came. Nobody except your fellow haters take anything you say seriously. In the fullness of my compassion, may I suggest therapy for you so you don’t continue to project your clearcut hatred of yourself onto those of us who support the democracy where nearly half the Jews on the planet still live?

To Dan Spitzer

Dan Spitzer,

I am afraid you totally missed my point. I didn’t try to defend J Street, with which I have many differences. I just wanted to point out the stupidity of not engaging in a dialogue with your opponents. In this particular case, Mr. Netanyahu should have met with the Congress members because and not despite the fact that they are opposed to his positions.
It would have given him a great opportunity to explain his position and try to convince them of his justice. For example pointing out to his support for a two state solutions based on a Jewish and an Arab state and calling on Mr. Abbas to do the same and to recognize the Jewish State.
Un fortunately, you either didn’t read carefully my comment, or your hatred for J street prevents you from thinking logically.

This is an example of why one cannot believe the news

“The group ... advocates for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.”

This is a flat out lie.  J Street advocates a Palestinian state on the ruins of Israel.  It is NOT an accident that this story appears with no by-line, no attribution, nothing.  For the J to run such a story is the height of, at best, journalistic slovenliness.  At worst the perpetration of the lie on the readers is a deliberate deception.

This is not a side issue to this story.  The point of this article is that the Israeli government refused to meet with a J Street sponsored delegation.  So the misrepresentation of J Street’s position falsifies the whole article.

One has to wonder about the journalistic integrity of a newspaper that would run such a story knowingly pivoting on a lie.
