For the first time the Oshman Family JCC is offering a free summer concert series, with performances through Aug. 22.
On the Town features diverse local and touring musicians, including West African band Baba Ken Okulolo and the Nigerian Brothers (June 26 at 7:30 p.m.) and Israeli folk dancing with Karina Lambert (July 22 at 6:30 p.m.). A performance by the Portland, Oregon–based improvisational jazz pianist Jake Oken-Berg is scheduled July 31 at 7:30 p.m.
The series will conclude with a theatrical dance performance by the Firebird Dancers at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 22. The South Bay-based troupe’s choreography features lyrical, modern and ballroom dance.
The first concert of the series, the Carpriccio Chamber Orchestra, took place June 12 and drew 180 people, from toddlers to seniors from the Moldaw Family Residences, according to Sally Oken, arts and culture director of the JCC. The two-hour concert included operatic singing, a tango demonstration and a youth orchestra.
The JCC is asking attendees to bring their own lawn chairs and picnics to the concerts, through there will be food for sale from the Flying Falafel.
