Cold, hard facts stand on their own in spite of world criticism

Follow j. on   and

The violent confrontation off the coast of Gaza on May 31, which regrettably left nine activists dead and scores wounded, has proven to be a PR disaster for Israel.

Not even ardent Israel supporters would disagree that the operation to stop a flotilla of Gaza-bound ships was poorly planned and ineptly executed.

But once again, world opinion seems determined to ignore certain truths, preferring instead a narrative that paints Israel as a wanton killer of peace activists.

As Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu put it, “That was not a love boat. That was a boat of hatred.” Many of the people aboard the Mavi Marmara were recruited, financed and trained by IHH, a Turkish Muslim organization with ties to radical jihadists.

Rather than peace activists, these people are bent on Israel’s destruction. As previous ships to Gaza contained weapons as cargo, Israel had to be sure the flotilla ships held no weaponry. But even though organizers refused to have their “humanitarian” supplies off-loaded in Ashdod or Egypt, the Israel Defense Forces still should have taken more careful, nonlethal measures to seize the ship.

Also, despite the outcry over this taking place in international waters, Israel acted lawfully. The blockade of Gaza is legal and wholly justifiable considering Hamas cares less about the well-being of Gazans and more about firing rockets into Israel.

The law is explicit. Seizing ships bent on running a lawful naval blockade is legal, even in international waters.

Then there is the assault itself. Video of the incident shows mobs beating commandos with metal poles. Their lives in danger, the Israelis had every right to defend themselves with lethal force.

The meta-problem is that Israel can ill afford to lose an image battle of this magnitude. For Israel bashers, this incident was like crack cocaine, fueling their hatred like nothing before.

Israeli officials behind the commando raid made mistakes. Now Israel will pay a price.

Relations with Turkey are at an all-time low and getting lower, as Turkey slowly turns away from the West. Israel’s relations with other countries will likely suffer as well, and street protests across the globe further tarnish Israel’s image.

For those who love and support Israel, tough days are ahead. We must acknowledge Israel’s tactical errors, but give no ground when it comes to Israel’s absolute right to defend itself.

Israel and the Jewish community worldwide will reflect on this fiasco, and learn from it. We mourn the loss of human life. Meanwhile, the work of defending and strengthening the Jewish state goes on.

Yes!

Meah Chuz to Jweekly.  We absolutely have a right to defense, in specific to Hamas who still claims to be our blood enemies.

I wonder what would have happened had someone raised a Kurdish or Armenian flag in Istanbul? I can guarantee the fate of the flag bearers would be doubtful.

He that casts stones…

Cold, Hard Dishonesty

This editorial is laden with dishonesty from start to finish. Radical jihadists bent on Israel’s destruction . . . with a boatload of humanitarian aid?! What a joke.

Odd that Israel felt no need to off-load and check the cargo of the previous boats they had allowed through the blockade. Gosh, I guess they weren’t worried about smuggled weapons then. Or maybe the extreme nationalists now running Israel just decided to make an example of this convoy.

And in doing so they made an example of themselves.

And yes, the law is explicit - the blockade is a prime example of collective punishment and therefore illegal; the blockade has also been declared illegal by the UN Security Council; and forcibly boarding a boat in international waters, while in this case not strictly piracy, is also illegal.

The IDF caught in the act of criminal behavior cannot claim the right of self-defense. Indeed, the other side’s story is now coming out and it appears the IDF may well have been shooting first and filming later.

Astonishing how the last-ditch Israel-First crowd so ardently clings to the belief that no matter what crimes Israel commits Israel is always, always the innocent victim.

GRF is kidding? Isn't he?

How does grf know what was on the boat? I she relying on an organization that supports al qeida for the truth? Has grf seen the video and photos of these"activists” chanting and calling for Israel’s destruction prior to sailing? Also wondering why grf does not attack Egypt as well—does he not know that Egypt shares a border with Gaza and is blockading Gaza as well? Is he ignorant or that scenario does not fit with his “let’s lynch Israel” mindset. The facts are clearly absent from grf’s post.

Typical grf Moronic Commentary

I shouldn’t even dignify these typical comments by ISM, JVP, Hamas supporter grf with a response. But I will accommodate his need to throw a childish tantrum.
1) Israel does indeed check all ships’ cargos headed for Gaza. Otherwise, weaponry and materials for such would get through to Hamas and we know the results: missiles fired at Israeli towns.
2)Anything declared by any body of the UN vis-a-vis Israel is a joke. Remember, the UN has attributed 90% of it’s human rights violations to Israel, never citing Arabic dictatorships, China, N. Korea, etc. So no one should take any UN critiques of Israel seriously.
3)The only videos shown of the violent events which took place aboard ship emphatically demonstrate that all acts of viiolence were initiated by members of this so called “peaceful human rights flotilla.”

More idiocy from Spitzer and proudisraeli

1) All cargo was thoroughly and openly checked at port of loading.

2) Which is probably why Israel did not off-load and check the previous 4 ships she allowed through to Gaza.

3) What is proundisraeli babbling about? Al queda? Attack Egypt? Lynch Israel? Aw, poor Israel, poor innocent Israel picked on again. She drops 100 armed men onto ships in international waters, kills and wounds dozens - and no one understands! No wonder she’s in such a testy mood.

4) Spitzer
may indeed believe the UN to be a joke (it is his right to be an idiot), but resolutions passed by the UN Security Council form international law, which Israel as a member of the UN is obligated to obey, as Israel is obligated to obey Art. 33 of the 4th Geneva Convention, Article 6 of the Charter Provisions of the Nuremburg Trials, and the 1907 Hague Regulation Convention (XI) Relative to Certain Restrictions with Regard to the Exercise of the Right of Capture in Naval War, all of which proscribe Israel’s latest atrocity. Spitzer will thunder, spit, and foam that legalities be damned Israel is under
siege so Israel gets to do whatever she pleases. Well, we all know where that road leads as the leaders of Germany, Italy, and Japan all believed the same thing.

Spitzer and ProundIsraeli are a pair of Zionist fanatics who carry nothing for humanity but just their small tribal corner of it. The very curse of the last 100 years; human rights and the rule of law are for Zionist Jews alone, the rest be damned. Their stupidity curses their own endeavor.

5) The videos only show what those editing them wish to be shown.

grf exposes himself

I think by now grf has exposed himself as an anti-Semite who opposes Israel’s very existence. Readers of this online edition are now clear on his excreble sentiments and there is no longer any reason for me to dignify his “hate Jews” commentary with further rejoinders.
By now, everyone can see through grf and recognize him for what he is and what he stands for…

Aw, poor Dan . . .

Again, unable to respond to a rational argument and facts presented he resorts to his usual invective and hatred. The man is a broken record: “anti-Semite…anti-Semite…anti-Semite.” Once challenged, the impoverished stance of Zionism always falls back to invective and dire accusations, just like its unlamented late but not-too-distant ideological cousins in Italy and Germany.

Tough love for Israel needed

Israel’s desperate desire to hold on to the occupied lands has basically made her a morally bankrupt regime. It is painful to see the nation born out of the nightmare of Nazi persecution is now doing similar things to the Palestinians. Collective punishment and imprisonment of Gaza civilians remind us of the Nazi Warsaw Ghetto. Also the wanton killings of unarmed civilians under the pretext of \“self defense\” or frequent use of disproportional force have somehow desensitized killing of Palestinians. It is amazing that we react with a shrug whenever we read about Palestinians being killed by the IDF (just today - 4 palestinian divers in Gaza were killed). This is not healthy and not sustainable. Contrary to the claims of Israel supporters, Israel is a liability to the US as we stand silent while Israel continues this disastrous path of destruction and moral decay. I am a firm believer that Israel has no desire for peace. Simply put, Israel knows that she has to give up the settlements (including valuable water resources) for peace and she is not going to do that. Israel has been paying lip service for peace for the last 40 years and status-quo is what Israel wants. Also Israel has built a strong support apparatus in this country that guarantees her a blank cheque in terms of providing political and propaganda cover for her transgressions. Israel knows and uses it well. Witness all the Hasbarah that our politicians are now doing for Israel starting with Pelosi. It is pretty pathetic and sad. All this in the long run is not sustainable and something is going to break/give. What Israel needs is some tough love from USA, unfortunately this is not going to happen anytime in the near future. Israel knows that she will be the international pariah, she is determined to drag us into it.

An Appropriate Name

Wiz, it’s clear your name is not short for wisdom. Rather, it appears it signifies the verb, as in “taking a wiz.” Because when you discuss the Palestinians and you fail to note that their duly elected gov’t, Hamas, sports a covenant which calls for the annhihilation of Israeli Jews, you prove incapable of honest analysis.
Re: those 4 Hamas divers the IDF dispatched to their reward of 72 virgins, I suspect you would maintain that they were on a scuba holiday and not a terrorist mission.
