Barak wins weekend TV debate for Labor leadership

by JERUSALEM (JPS) -- Labor Party leadership frontrunner Ehud Barak handily won a debate between the three contenders for Labor's t, The survey found that of 900 viewers who watched the debate on Israel's Channel 2 Saturday, 29 percent thought Barak won. Follow

Asked who had the best chance of beating Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Likud in the 2000 elections, 57 percent said Barak; 18 percent went with Beilin; 2.4 percent with Ben-Ami and 2 percent Sneh.

Barak, a former army chief of staff and defense minister, recently edged out Labor leader Shimon Peres in a pre-primary contest for Labor's top spot in the June 3 party runoffs.
