A community-wide dedication of Gan Yarok, the country’s first green Jewish cemetery, will take place at 10:30 a.m. May 30 at 301 Tennessee Valley Road in Mill Valley.

Rabbis Stuart Kelman, Menachem Creditor and David J. Cooper will officiate at the one-hour ceremony, which will begin at the chapel and continue with a procession around Gan Yarok, the Jewish section at Forever Fernwood that includes Orthodox, Conservative and community areas.

In addition to readings and songs from the psalms based on the traditional consecration ceremony, there will be teachings and Jewish songs celebrating the Earth and the natural order.

In March, about 40 people consecrated the burial grounds during a halachic ceremony so Gan Yarok could officially open.

Natural burial uses no toxic embalming fluid or concrete liners, only a biodegradable casket, wicker basket or burial shroud.
