JCHS cafeteria takes top honors as ‘most vegetarian-friendly’

San Francisco’s Jewish Community High School of the Bay has been named the most vegetarian-friendly cafeteria in a nationwide competition, beating out four other private schools.

The online contest was sponsored by Peta2, an animal-rights youth organization, under the auspices of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

The Jewish Community High School’s cafeteria menu is vegetarian, kosher and organic. Food options include vegetarian sushi, falafel, potato leek soup, and a burrito bar.

Last year the school won the Golden Carrot award from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine for its efforts to promote healthy school lunches.

“It’s great to be recognized once again,” said JCHS director of food services Stuart Jacobs. “This award points to our vegetarian focus. We try to make sure our students are excited about kosher food, but also excited about vegetarian food.”
