JCHS team takes first place in law event

The Jewish Community High School of the Bay captured first place in the advanced division at the recent national RAVSAK Moot Beit Din program in Washington, D.C.

The five members of the JCHS squad competed against 20 other teams, taking first place in the advanced division for a third time. The competition was held April 25 in Arlington, Va.

Moot Beit Din invites students from Jewish high schools throughout North America to examine issues of Jewish law through a contemporary lens. Every year, RAVSAK prepares a new case on a topic that has not yet been adjudicated within a halachic (Jewish law) framework.

After intensive study of traditional Jewish text, students prepare written decisions on a case given to them. They then present and defend their decisions before judges during oral arguments at the competition. This year’s case was about torture and the treatment of a suspected terrorist.
