Sacramento’s annual Jewish Heritage Festival has been scheduled for May 2 on the steps of the state Capitol building.

Organizers from the Jewish Federation of the Sacramento Region say the area will be transformed into an Israeli shuk (market), with festivities to include dancing, Judaica shops, and Middle Eastern and Jewish food. Also on tap are cultural exhibits, activities for families and children and a teen zone.

The entertainment lineup features Grammy-nominated Jewish rapper Matisyahu, whose 2009 release “One Day” was a theme song of the 2010 Winter Olympics. The Los Angeles Israeli Dance Team is also on the program.

State Sen. Darrell Steinberg is scheduled to be the master of ceremonies. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sens. Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein and Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson are among the invited guests.

The event coincides with Lag B’Omer and is being held in honor of Jewish American Heritage Month. It kicks off with an Israel Unity Walk and the release of doves.

This year’s theme is “The Centennial of the Kibbutz Movement.” Sacramento-area religious schools are creating displays that highlight different kibbutz industries, such as drip irrigation, flower production, and spas and retreats. There will also be hands-on activities.

Event hours are 1 to 4:30 p.m. To volunteer or become a festival sponsor, call (916) 486-0906 or visit www.jewishsac.org.
