JFCS independent living complex opens

Applications are being accepted for Gary Shupin House, a new San Francisco independent living complex launched by the S.F.-based Jewish Family and Children’s Services. Gary Shupin House offers support services for adults with developmental disabilities. Residents also participate in volunteer service, cultural events and recreational activities.

Residents either have a private one-bedroom apartment or share a two-bedroom apartment in the four-unit building, and  receive personalized support to manage the challenges of everyday living.

Gary Shupin was a developmentally disabled Jewish man who lived semi-independently in the apartment building in Laurel Village. After Shupin’s death in 2008 at age 57, his mother, Barbara Shupin, and uncle, Gerson Bakar, donated the property to JFCS to initiate the program.
