Bed-racers spring into action for benefit event

The Bay Area’s zaniest bed-racers competed April 17 for best décor and fastest speed at the first Bed Race for the Future at Marina Middle School in San Francisco.

Benefiting the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame of Northern California and NFL Alumni Caring for Kids, the event drew nearly 250 people and raised about $1,500, according to Gary Weiner, one of the event organizers.

The “Bay to Breakers on wheels” lived up to that advance billing as 22 teams creatively decorated a mattress, box spring and bed frame on wheels, and raced against each other in the hopes of winning all-you-can-eat chicken wings from Hooters, cases of Vitamin Water, family fun days on Pier 39 and other prizes.

Highlights of the day included JSHOFNC President Jack Anderson blowing the shofar before each race and the Bay Area Bombers roller derby team attempting to compete on roller skates.

“Everyone took full advantage of their creativity,” said Weiner, JSHOFNC executive director. “People were competitive and had a good time.”
