Sarkozy wants to ban Islamic veils

Follow j. on   and

French President Nicolas Sarkozy will submit legislation to parliament on banning Islamic veils that fully cover a woman’s face and body, according to a government spokesman.

The bill would ban the wearing of veils “in all public places.”

Sarkozy has said such outfits oppress women and are “not welcome” in France. This would be his first action toward an outright ban. — jta
