UpStart Bay Area, the organization that incubates and supports fledgling Jewish nonprofits, recently announced its second class of “upstarters.”
They are:
• Moishe House, the Oakland-based international nonprofit that provides rent subsidies for 31 Moishe Houses worldwide, including three in the Bay Area. In each house, three to five young Jews agree to host a dozen programs per month in exchange for rent subsidies. The goal is to build community among Jews in their 20s.
• Zeek, the S.F.-based Jewish magazine edited by Jo Ellen Kaiser Green, a longtime active member of Congregation Sha’ar Zahav.
• In the Market, a nonprofit that seeks to organize and educate Bay Area Jews about the connections between Jewish teachings and local, sustainable food systems.
• Bay Area Sustainable Kosher Meats, a fledgling nonprofit that will be an integrated farm and animal-processing facility, both Jewish owned and operated, committed to connecting kashrut and halachah (Jewish law) to caring for the environment, animals and workers.
The first class of upstarters was: G-dcast, Wilderness Torah, Bay Area Learning Initiative, Fair Trade Judaica and Mitzvah on the Rocks.
