Gdeaths Lutz, Irv
Irving Lutz
Irving Lutz lived the American dream.  Born in Denver, Colorado, April 1st, 1919 (April Fool’s day), he was the antithesis of a fool, yet had a great sense of humor and a loving, sincere heart of gold. He met the love of his life, Dorothy, in Harlingen, Texas, while stationed there during WWII. He took a great deal of pride in serving his country. After the war they married and moved to Oakland, California.

Irving and his brother Herman started LUTZ Tiger Tread Company in San Francisco with a few thousand dollars worth of army surplus retread tire equipment that they purchased at an auction. Not knowing how to make a tire or sell one, they caught on quickly, Irv selling them off the back of a pick-up truck to begin with. By the 1970s LUTZ Tiger Tread was the largest passenger tire retreader in California, with plants in Benicia and San Diego.

Always a humble man with simple taste, his diet consisted of hamburgers, scrambled eggs, tuna on an English muffin, with the occasional Dream of Cream cake from Neldams, or a banana split from Fentons (all chocolate ice cream, hot fudge, real whipping cream).

Somehow in the 1970s the humble man caught the Italian car bug and started driving Ferraris. The first thing he did was take off the new Pirelli’s and replace them with LUTZ Tiger Treads. He believed in what he manufactured, and was proud to have his tires on his Ferrari. In addition to sports cars, his weekly poker games and golfing with his buddies at Mira Vista made him the happiest guy in town.

Most important to him was his love of family and helping the community he lived in. His wife and love Dorothy passed away in 2007 after 64 years of marriage. They were both very active in the Jewish Federation of the Greater East Bay, and many other charities. They were always there when you needed them. There was absolutely nothing they wouldn’t do for their family.

What he instilled in his loved ones was to stay positive, don’t feel sorry for yourself, live by the golden rule and if you got knocked down, to get back up. And most importantly, eat your chocolate every day. He is survived by his two children, Terri Lutz of Oakland and Mark Lutz of Novato, five grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter. Donations in his memory may be made to the endowment fund at Temple Beth Abraham.
