The older adult services department at the JCC of the East Bay recently came up with an idea for a field trip — to another JCC.
On Feb. 18, four seniors took advantage of the outing, which took them 42 miles from Berkeley to the Bay Area’s newest JCC, the Oshman Family JCC in Palo Alto.
Upon arrival, the East Bay group had lunch with some of the seniors from Moldaw Family Residences, which, like the JCC, is located on the 5-month-old Taube Koret Campus for Jewish Life.
Volunteers from the Lace Museum in Sunnyvale gave a presentation following lunch.
“We learned a lot of interesting lace facts,” said Lauren Greis, the East Bay JCC’s outreach coordinator.
For instance, many men who served in the Navy during World War II knew how to tat, a technique for handcrafting lace with a series of knots and loops. The activity kept them busy during down time on the ship.
Finally, the seniors from the East Bay got a tour of the new Taube Koret campus, and learned about the symbolic and environmental elements of the architecture.
“Some of our seniors expressed interest in seeing the new facility [in Palo Alto],” Greis said. “They were excited ... and they were really impressed.”
