Musical weaves Passover story with recovery

“Freedom Song,” a musical theater production that weaves together the story of Passover with the true tales of 18 recovering addicts, will have its Bay Area premiere March 7 to 9 with performances in Berkeley, San Francisco, Burlingame and Palo Alto.

The musical is a project of Beit T’Shuvah, a 120-bed Jewish residential treatment center for addiction in Los Angeles.

Residents, staff and alumni of Beit T’Shuvah all helped create “Freedom Song,” which juxtaposes a modern family seder and a 12-step meeting to highlight the parallels between being a slave in Egypt and being a slave to addiction.

The cast will engage the audience in a discussion after each of the following performances:

• March 7, 10:30 a.m., Midrasha in Berkeley, 1301 Oxford St., Berkeley.

• March 7, 7 p.m., Peninsula Temple Sholom, 1655 Sebastian Drive, Burlingame.

• March 8, 7 p.m., Congregation Emanu-El, 2 Lake St., San Francisco.

• March 9, 7:30 p.m., Congregation Etz Chayim, 4161 Alma St., Palo Alto.
