Emmy H. Altman
Gently “slipped away” at the Jewish Home in San Francisco on January 11, 2010 at age 99.
Emmy was born and raised in the town of Schweinfurt, Bavaria. With luck, pluck and courage, despite Nazi restrictions, she graduated from the University of Wurtzburg, where she received her teaching credentials. In 1938, she bravely boarded a train out of Germany and settled in San Francisco, where she resumed her teaching career. She remained a highly respected middle school educator for almost 40 years. In 1940, she married Congregation Emanu-El’s organist, Ludwig Altman. Their marriage spanned over fifty years, ending only with Ludwig’s death in 1990.
A proud member of Congregation Emanu-El for over 70 years, Emmy served on its Sisterhood board. A woman of wit, wisdom and renowned elegance, she will be missed by her many friends. In her memory, an organ concert will be scheduled at the synagogue (2 Lake St., San Francisco, CA 94118). Contributions to the synagogue’s Ludwig Altman Organ Fund preferred.
Funeral services were held at Home of Peace Cemetery, Colma.

Leo Maurice Cohan
June 19, 1911–January 15, 2010
Leo Cohan, born in Dirksland, the Netherlands, died at age 98 years in Santa Cruz, CA. Leo was surrounded at his passing by family including his loving, devoted wife and constant companion of more than 70 years, Hanna.
Considering that his marriage to Hanna began with a proxy wedding in Amsterdam, with his Dad standing in his place because Leo was already in Boston and could not afford to be there himself, Leo more than fulfilled his pledge to Hanna’s father to provide for her and to raise a family.
Also survived by his sons Ronald of Granite Bay, Richard of Larkspur, Russell of Los Altos and their spouses (Mary Ann, Marilyn and Tracy, respectively); by son Rodney of San Bruno; predeceased by his third son, Randall in 1980. Survived by adoring (and equally adored) grandchildren Jennifer, Juli, Jodi, Matthew, Daniel, Missy, Brandon, Brady, and Kendall, and by his very special first great grandson, Luca.
A longtime resident of Palo Alto, and then later Santa Cruz, Leo worked for Lockheed Missiles and Space Company until his mandatory retirement at age 65 in 1976. A very active member of Congregation Beth Am and in many social causes, including the Ecumenical Hunger Project, Israel Bond fundraising dinners, the Jewish National Fund and various projects of the Lockheed Management Association, such as disaster relief; Dale Carnegie’s course “How to Win Friends and Influence People” apparently left an indelible mark on Leo. He will be sorely missed.
Burial took place last week at Hills of Eternity in Colma. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be sent to: Congregation Beth Am, 26790 Arastradero Road, Los Altos Hills, CA 94022.
