Richard Goldman has been named 2010 Alumnus of the Year by U.C. Berkeley’s Cal Alumni Association. The award recognizes Goldman (class of ’41) for his support for the Bay Area, the environment, Jewish affairs, Israel and his contributions to the university.

A San Francisco native, Goldman established the Richard and Rhoda Goldman Fund, which helps nonprofit organizations working to protect the environment, strengthen the Jewish community, stabilize global population and support Israel. Over the years, the fund has distributed more than a half billion dollars to various causes.

In 1990, Goldman and his wife established the Goldman Environmental Prize, which annually rewards six international grassroots environmental activists for their heroic and significant efforts to preserve the natural world.

Goldman has also contributed to his alma mater, including a $10 million gift to the School of Public Policy in 1997. The Richard and Rhoda Goldman School of Public Policy has been ranked the nations’s top grad school in public policy analysis.
