S.F. congregation celebrates its 60th

Conservative Congregation B’nai Emunah will mark its 60th anniversary this weekend. The synagogue was founded in 1949 in San Francisco by 23 German Jewish wartime refugees who arrived via Shanghai, China.

The celebration begins at Shabbat services on Friday, Dec. 11, with remarks and sermon by Rabbi Mark Melamut. On Saturday, Dec. 12, retired Rabbi Ted Alexander, a Shanghailander and spiritual leader of the congregation for 38 years, will lead services. A catered lunch honoring surviving founding members will follow.

At 1 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 13, the congregation will host an open house at A Muse Gallery, 614 Alabama St., S.F. The event is open to the public and will feature wine tasting, hors d’oeuvres and a display of historical documents chronicling the story of B’nai Emunah through the years.
