Louis K. Cherin

Feb. 22, 1915 — Nov. 11, 2009

Lou was in full health, mind, and spirit, until he succumbed to injuries sustained when struck by an automobile on November 3, 2009.

Born in San Francisco in 1915 of immigrant parents, Lou was the second youngest of ten children, all living the American dream in the best of all places, the beautiful, complete world of San Francisco. He was a graduate of Lowell High School, class of 1932, and U.C. Berkeley, class of 1936. Past President of Congregation Beth Sholom and past board member of the Jewish Community Federation, Lou distinguished himself by his great intellect, sharp wit, and generosity, beyond measure, to his family, and community. His humility and sensitivity in socio-economic environments set the highest standard of virtues to emulate by his children and grandchildren. He acted quietly, seeking neither fame nor attention. Lou was a businessman with vision, insight and a work ethic that was unparalleled; he founded and actively participated in the day-to-day operation of Cherin’s Appliance, a Mission District institution, until his final days.

Adored and adoring husband of Adina for 46 years. Together they shaped the character of their extended family and all in their sphere, reveling in life and Jewish heritage. Lou is survived by his wife, Gloria Ross Cherin, who brought a profound dimension of love, devotion and support.

Lou was the paterfamilias and role model for a large and extended family, beginning with his children Feralee and Charles Levin, Don and Margery Cherin, Marty and Rise Cherin, Willie and Claire Cherin, Sue and Robert Rushakoff, his grandchildren Lisa Levin and Michael Winner, Ellen Levin, Karen and Glenn Allen, Heather Cherin-Yamashita and Takahiro Yamashita, Rebecca Cherin, Kim and Andrew Oliff, Stacy Cherin, Michael Cherin, Zac Cherin, Sarah Cherin, Joshua Rushakoff, Benjamin Rushakoff, and his great-grandchildren, Amanda and Sam Winner, Cooper and Joseph Oliff, and Lilah Allen. Lou’s influence extended to his step-children Judy Dobbs and Raoul McDuff, Dennis and Debra Ross, Jeffrey and Joanie Ross, their children, Aaron Dobbs, Gabe and Tamara Ross, Rachel, Ilana, Brandon and Caroline Ross, and to many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Lou was preceded in death by his nine siblings, Anne, Max, Ben, Jerome, Ted, Alfred, William, Manny, and Cherin (Rose).

Services were held on Sunday, November 15th at Sinai Memorial Chapel, 1501 Divisadero in San Francisco. The family requests that contributions be made to Congregation Beth Sholom, 301 14th Avenue, San Francisco, 94118.
