To commemorate Kristallnacht, a coordinated attack on Jews and their property in Nazi Germany and Austria that began Nov. 9, 1938, the S.F.-based Holocaust Center of Northern California will hold a panel discussion 6:30 p.m. Monday, Nov. 9 to learn more about life in Shanghai during this tumultuous period.
Shanghai, which did not require visas at the time, provided safety for thousands of Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi persecution.
Panelists include Shanghai survivor Ted Alexander, rabbi emeritus of Congregation B’nai Emunah in San Francisco, and John H. Stutesman, who served as vice consul to the United States in Shanghai from 1946 to 1949. Rachel Isquith, the center’s director of community outreach, will moderate.
