To heal post-‘Rachel’ rift, federation needs a new policy

The ad from the S.F.-based Jewish Community Federation in the Sept. 16 j. was commendable in acknowledging the egregious errors made by the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival.

Unfortunately, the federation did not address the crucial issue: What policy will the federation put in place to ensure that our donations will never again be used to help fund events that are organized in collaboration with extremist groups that support boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel?

The federation urged the SFJFF to “adopt new policies and procedures to ensure that the specific problems associated with the ‘Rachel’ event do not happen again, including policies addressing choice of co-presenters and speakers.”

Yet the federation itself has no policy to deal with the strong likelihood that the film festival will ignore the federation’s suggestions and continue to work in conjunction with extreme anti-Israel groups.

The federation appropriately stated that it would not offer financial support to organizations that advocate boycotts, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel; however, it has refused so far to explicitly ban giving its funds to organizations that partner in their events with those that advocate BDS.

While the SFJFF does not directly support boycotts, divestment and sanctions, some film festival events are presented in conjunction with extreme groups that do actively advocate BDS against Israel, such as the Jewish Voice for Peace and American Friends Service Committee.

The federation statement does nothing to prevent federation funds from being used in the future by the film festival (or any other organization) for defamatory anti-Israel events, such as the Corrie debacle.

Unfortunately, despite widespread community outrage and urging from the federation, the film festival chose not to institute any policy banning collaboration with groups that advocate BDS against Israel.

Indeed, the recent SFJFF open letter to the community revealed that Peter Stein, the festival director, learned very little from the Corrie fiasco. He showed no remorse for collaborating with extreme anti-Israel groups (JVP and AFSC) or for presenting the Corrie event, which demonized Israel and glorified the pro-Hamas International Solidarity Movement.

Five moderate board members of the film festival resigned after the publication of the festival’s woefully inadequate letter. Tellingly, one of the remaining dominant festival board members is Rachel Pfeffer, the former acting national director of the misleadingly named Jewish Voice for Peace. The JVP, which has been collaborating with the film festival in its events, incessantly calls for boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel.

These BDSes are tools of the larger anti-Israel campaign first begun by the Arab states and Iran, and now parroted by the far left and extreme right, to delegitimize and then to destroy Israel as a Jewish state.

By virtue of its ongoing support of the film festival (the federation has not asked that its name be removed as a “major supporter” from SFJFF’s Web site), the federation is inadvertently but effectively legitimizing the co-presenting anti-Israel extremist groups and their views.

Our community has become infamous in the Jewish world as being in the vanguard of American Jews abandoning Israel. In Daniel Gordis’ Oct. 15 op-ed in the Jerusalem Post about such abandonment, he lists as a prime example the San Francisco Jewish community’s funding of a film festival that partners with extreme anti-Israel groups such as the JVP to show an “Israel-bashing ‘documentary.’ ”

Is this what we want our community to be known for?

It is time to make it unambiguously clear that our Jewish federation will not support events or organizations that demonize or defame Israel. Nor will it support organizations that partner in their events with individuals or groups that call for boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel.

The S.F. Jewish Film Festival is free to collaborate with whomever it chooses and co-present all the anti-Israel, anti-Semitic events that its board irresponsibly allows.

However, our donations to mainstream Jewish organizations, such as the federation, should never help pay for — and thus legitimize — such defamatory and destructive events.

Adopting this common-sense policy will assure people donating to the federation that their contributions will be used wisely, and indeed will strengthen the federation and the community. It will not only put this issue behind us, but it will prevent similar issues from causing discord to our community in the future.

Failure to adopt such a policy will leave a cloud over the entire donation-allocation process and almost certainly guarantee future discord.

The SF Jewish Federation leaders have failed to address the crucial issue

The SF Jewish Federation leaders have failed to address the crucial issue:  how to ensure that our donations will never again be used to help fund events that are organized in collaboration with anti-Israel extremist groups?

Presently the Federation is using our contribution to fund events, which are co-presented by organizations that advocate boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel, such as the misleadingly named Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP).

The Federation statement does nothing to prevent Federation funds from being used in the future by the Film Festival, or any other organization, for defamatory anti-Israel events, such as the Corrie event.
The Federation statement does nothing to prevent Federation funds from being used again to fund events which are done in collaboration with extreme anti-Israel groups (such as the JVP) which call for boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel.

The whole issue would be behind us once the Federation adopt a policy stating that it will not support organizations or events that demonize/defame Israel. Nor will it support organizations that collaborate in their events with groups that call for boycotts, divestment and sanctions against Israel.

The issue is kept alive because of the Federation’s failure to adopt such a simple and obvious policy, one that is completely in line with its mission statement.

In sum, adopting such a common sense policy will assure people donating to the Federation that their contributions will no longer be squandered to fund events done in conjunction with anti-Israel organizations and will thereby prevent similar issues from causing discord in the community.

180 degrees backwards...

These guys want the SFJCF to repudiate the most popular Jewish institution in the Bay Area - the film festival - and they don’t think this will “certainly guarantee future discord”?  These authors don’t want to admit that the film festival is as popular as it is precisely because it does such a better job of acknowledging the diversity of views in the Bay Area Jewish community than, frankly, the J or the Federation.  But that’s the truth.

Re: 180 degrees backwards...

I don’t think the film festival is the most popular Jewish institution in the Bay Area!  Well, maybe it’s popular within the anti-Israel crowd…  But so many of them aren’t even Jewish!  It’s popular with Arabs and with people who want to boycott Israel.  But we can’t call it “acknowledging the diversity” when Michael Harris is shouted down.

The next generation

Being a not so recent transplant from Soviet Union, I have always known that my children will grow up being proud to be jews and zionists.
We have gone to Tawonga, my son attends a local Jewish Day school, participates in the religious school at the temple.
We light Shabbat candles, and celebrate Jewish holidays.  We’ve been to Israel, and stand together whenever there is an anti-Israeli activities.
My son is aware of the current events in Israel and the United States.  He is a smart articulate kid.  He is 12 years old.

I don’t know how much more I can do for his Jewish identity.

Now, dear Federation, please help me explain to my preteen why you are choosing to act like a teenager instead of the leader.

Please help me explain to my son why the Jewish Federation will not commit to a firm explicit stand that makes it very clear for all that neither funds, nor Federation name will be used to legitimize anti-semitic and anti-Israel events.

Admitting feebly that perhaps a mistake was made is not enough.  We need reassurance and a guarantee that the kind of event like “Rachel” will never get a single penny from the Federation funds. Adopt the resolution that Mr Alon has proposed.  Then we can put it all behind us and move on.  And then we’ll be known for our strong pro-Israel views and actions. Make us proud.  Lead the way.  And make it easy for parents like me to raise the next generation of proud Zionists.

Lead, or get out of the way!

The so-called Federation “leadership” refuses to take a clear stand banning Federation funding of anti-Israel events.  If they can’t summon the courage or the sense to do that, they should quit and make way for leaders worthy of the name.  This Federation is fast becoming a laughing stock, and as any good actor knows, one should leave the stage while the audience is still chuckling.

The "rabble" speaks!

One of the favorite tricks of those who are criticized is to label the critics as marginal and extreme.  Thus, we had Doug Kahn referring to critics of Federation-funded Israel-bashing as “rabble”.  Given the stature of the authors of this op-ed, it’s time for Federation officials to stop playing games and calling names and do the right thing: forever end Federation collaboration with and support of anti-Israel groups and individuals.

Take Notice Federation

To the Federation: Isn’t it time that you recognize there are solid members of our community who are asking you to step up to the plae and confront the Film Festival Issure in a Noble Way. We are not a bunch of Rabble Rousers as you have intimated.  I like many others have been a loyal supporter of the Federation for years. However, my loyalty has been shaken and my future support of the Fedration depends greatly on what you the Federation do in the coming months. The eloquent Op Ed piece does tell it all, better than I could ever hope to do. The bell is tolling dear Federation.
Fred

A New Federal Policy Is Only Logical

This op-ed is dead-on.  The best way to try to prevent another “Rachel” debacle in the future is for the S.F. Federation to adopt a policy that its beneficiary agencies should not conduct events that are supported by or promote the policies of anti-Israel organizations.  Such a policy seems basic to any Jewish organization, and is in keeping with this Federation’s purported mission of “giving continuity to the Jewish value” of “supporting of Israel, the democratic homeland for the Jewish people.”  The Federation is correct that it is not its beneficiary agencies and so it cannot be expected to police agencies’ events in advance—all the more reason to have a policy in place to make its standards known so that its agencies can act in accord.  The S.F. Bay Area Jewish community has never been one to shy away from exercising its freedom of speech.  The Federation is simply being asked to ensure that funds donated to a Jewish organization be used for Jewish purposes.  Any dollar spent toward the hatred, defamation or deligitimization of the State of Israel is a dollar spent for Israel’s enemies and is not a Jewish cause.

Why no one from Sderot was invited

Cindy Corrie is English speaking and American.

The residents of Sderot are Hebrew speaking and Middle Eastern. This, rather than politics, explains why they were not invited to a discussion about Gaza.

This is an example of how being English speaking and white can trump being Jewish.

There is a dangerous sickness,,

In reading the threatening letter to the Federation from three well heeled machers, non of whom are either from or live in San Francisco,  and then the comments of those approving of their threat, I can only say that there is a serious and ugly sickness that is permeating the organized Jewish community that is difficult to put a name to but be assured, some one will.

self-hatred

The name of the sickness Jeff Blankfort refers to is “self-hatred”. The most prominent sign of this disease is the refusal to reject those who demonize Jews and Israel and the most common symptom is feeling ashamed of being Jewish. Thank God we have people like Abraham Sofaer, Zvi Alon, and Sanford N. Diller.
