Several Peninsula congregations have joined together to stock up on Israeli-made goods at Trader Joe’s, continuing a wider effort to counter anti-Israel boycotts that stated in June.

On Aug. 23 and 26, members from Peninsula Temple Sholom, Peninsula Temple Beth El, Peninsula Sinai Congregation and Congregation Beth Jacob went shopping together and bought up Eden feta cheese, Israeli couscous and Dorot products, among others.

“It was very respectful. We wanted to make an effort to show our support for Trader Joe’s for stocking these products,” said Peninsula Temple Sholom’s Rabbi Kim Ettlinger.

Norman Licht of Congregation Beth Jacob made a point of expressing thanks to the store managers. Licht said a handful of shoppers went to the San Carlos store each day, while a dozen shopped at both the Menlo Park and San Mateo stores.

The congregations were responding to a YouTube video urging viewers to boycott Trader Joe’s and “deshelve” Israeli products.
