Bad idea for SFJFF to invite Corrie’s mom

Follow j. on   and

The San Francisco Jewish Film Festival did not become the pre-eminent forum for Jewish film by playing it safe. Throughout its 29-year history, the festival has courted controversy by including provocative films, especially when it comes to the subject of the Middle East.

So when festival programmers added “Rachel” to this year’s lineup, no one should have been surprised.

The documentary explores incidents surrounding the death of Rachel Corrie, a young American activist aligned with the International Solidarity Movement, a viciously anti-Israel organization that calls for the destruction of the Jewish state. Corrie was killed in Gaza in 2003 during an aggressive protest in which ISM members stood in front of Israeli bulldozers involved in home demolitions.

While director Simone Bitton, who was born in Morocco to a Jewish family and is both a French and Israeli citizen, claims to present a balanced view in “Rachel,” the film gives a sympathetic portrait of the late activist and her anti-Israel cause.

That, however, should not preclude the festival from showing “Rachel.”

What we disagree with is the festival organizers’ decision to invite Corrie’s mother, Cindy Corrie, to attend the July 25 screening and participate in a post-screening Q&A. It would have been better to have Bitton on hand to respond to viewers’ questions and ire, but she turned down an invitation, citing a schedule conflict, organizers said.

So were are left with Corrie’s participation, which, as our letters section last week and this week suggests, has sparked outrage among some of our readers. There is good reason.

Cindy Corrie is the founder of the Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice, a pro-Palestinian organization that promotes the anti-Israel views of her daughter. Can there be any doubt that Corrie will use her festival appearance as a soapbox to present those same views?

It is one thing to present controversial films from across the political spectrum. And it is one thing for directors to attend and defend their work. But it is quite another to invite someone such as Cindy Corrie.

As a grieving mother, Cindy Corrie has our sympathies. No parent should ever have to bury a child. But as an echo chamber of her daughter’s repulsive opinions, this woman has no business attending and speaking at a Jewish event like the film festival.

We are all for free speech. We are all for scheduling controversial films. But Cindy Corrie’s appearance crosses a line. The Jewish Film Festival is under no obligation to offer a microphone to Israel-bashers.

Dishonest

There is no evidence that the ISM is “a viciously anti-Israel organization that calls for the destruction of the Jewish state.” What the ISM calls for is using non-violent resistance against the occupation and an end to violence on both sides. Nor does the “Rachel Corrie Foundation for Peace and Justice” promote anti-Israeli views, but inclusive views based on mutual understanding and non-violence. That JWeekly is so willing to distort the views of two organizations promoting non-violent responses to such an intractable conflict is sad indeed.

No "Evidence?!"

One has to keep from laughing to read the comment above that the ISM doesn’t support violence. As Mother Jones, not exactly a right wing rag, reported, the ISM sequestered two Pakistani suicide bombers the day before they snuffed out the lives of innocent Israelis. Moreover, the IDF arrested a prominent Islamic Jihad mentor of suicide bombers right in ISM headquarters.

Indeed, ISM leaders like Paul Larudee have openly stated that they cannot fail to support acts of Palestinian violence which are in accord with the “Palestinian struggle.” Larudee went on to say how empowering it felt to sleep in the bed of a Palestinian suicide bomber.

Finally, that poor martyr Rachel Corrie herself worked on behalf of Palestinian terrorism by attempting to halt the demolition of houses under which rockets and other munitions were smuggled to the likes of Hamas. Where do those who maintain that the ISM doesn’t promote violence suppose all those rockets recently fired into Israeli towns from Gaza were smuggled? They were tunneled into Rafah under houses just like the one which JVP and ISM’s “pacifist heroine”  Rachel Corrie was “defending.”

Dan's been drinking the kool-aid again

Not only does he not know what “sequestered” means, but he appears to be a devotee of FrontPage.rag, one of the more dishonest pubs around. As has been pointed out, the two in question just walked in the door and were there only a short while. ISM did not know who they were and Israel has acknowledged this. The “Islamic Jihad mentor” nonsense is just that: some kid wanted by the Israelis ran into there office. They gave him a cup of tea. They didn’t know he was being chased.

Nor did Larudee say any such thing that sleeping in the bed of suicide bomber was “empowering.” The statement in question is readily available on the net and doesn’t even come close.

Nor was the home Rachel died defending a storehouse for arms and munitions. There were no tunnels under the house and no arms within, nor did the Israelis ever make such a claim.

When Dan claims terrorist arms were tunneled in under house “just like” the one Rachel died defending, he must mean homes owned by Palestinians with four walls and a roof, for that is the only criterion Israel uses to loose their bulldozers.

Still no evidence...

Dan, you either don’t know the meaning of the word “sequestered”, or you are trying to deliberately mislead people.  So those suicide bombers showed up at an ISM office.  So what? This is called “guilt by association” and it’s one of the classic logical fallacies.  If YOU showed up at their office and had tea, would that make the ISM Zionists?  Even the Israeli government’s official page on the subject says that the people the suicide bombers made contact with were “unwitting.”

Corrie not an Israeli-basher

1. The ISM is a nonviolent organization: http://palsolidarity.org/about

2. The policies and activities of Israel in regard to Palestine hurt not only Palestinians, but Israelis as well. To oppose Israeli militarism, violence, and settlement activities in Palestinian Territories, is the most true form of support for both the people of Israel and Palestine.

I stand with Cindy Corrie, who I know, and who I believe to be without a single hateful bone in her entire body.

I think that the author(s) of this editorial deserve to re-think their position against the appearance of Cindy Corrie. Cindy Corrie is not an “Israel-basher.” - Really. Opposition to the violence of the State of Israel is not the same as opposition to the State of Israel.

If there is want for a true peace, then it will require real confrontations, and it will require strong intention and volition to extinguish the violence that exists on all sides of this issue. There is no better place to start than conversation. Build respectful relationships with all people, even those with whom there may be disagreement.

If Cindy is an Israel-basher, then there is truly very little hope for peace. Fortunately, the truth of the matter is that Cindy is not an Israel-basher, but instead, is a hard-working and compassionate advocate for true and sustainable peace and justice for all.

Misrepresentation of Corries

As someone who has spoken with both Craig and Cindy Corrie and heard them speak many times, I can attest to the fact that I have NEVER heard them utter any word against Jews or the State of Israel, but only to condemn certain Israeli policies.

The Corries have consistently worked for peace in the region for all people there, both Palestinian and Israeli.  Those of us who have worked with them, Jewish, non-Jewish, Israeli, non-Israeli have the greatest respect for their fortitude and steadfastness in their fight for peace and justice despite having lost a daughter and unwarranted attacks such as this editorial.

Misinformation can never be acceptable, especially by a well respected journal in the community.

Film festival should reflect diversity of views, life

A Jewish film festival should explore all the political, social, cultural, religious, and sexual issues that affect Jews in Israel and here in the Diaspora. Who is JWeekly to try to determine what is, or is not, appropriate? Aside from this, many Jewish and Christian peacemakers like Corrie’s daughter have the well-being of both Jews and Palestinans at heart.

Would you welcome "Obsession" at your Arab film festival?

Dear Advocates of “Rachel”:  It will be more incumbent upon a leading Jewish film festival to screen a one-sided, biased anti-Israel propaganda film like “Rachel” and to then add insult to injury by inviting her bereaved mother to manipulate the audience afterwards, when Arab American film festivals see fit to screen “Obsession” and to invite a speaker like Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch to offer his “valuable” insights afterwards unopposed or perhaps a handpicked 9/11 widow or one of the innumerable bereaved mothers of an Israeli terror attack, a number of whom are American citizens.

So, how fairly and open-mindedly did the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) receive the film “Obsession”?  In a complaint filed with the Federal Elections Commission, CAIR alleged: “According to the “Obsession” website, Rabbi Raphael Shore is the founder and producer of “Obsession”. Sources have reported that Rabbi Raphael Shore is an Israeli citizen who lives in Jerusalem and was employed as an executive director with Aish HaTorah International. Gregory Ross has been identified as Clarion Fund’s spokesman and communications director. According to the FEC candidate contributions database, Gregory Ross is a fundraiser for Aish HaTorah International. It was reported that distributors of “Obsession” asked viewers to register for a screening of “Obsession” by visiting an Aish HaTorah website.  It appears that the funding for the production, marketing and distribution of “Obsession” may have originated from Israel-based Aish HaTorah International.”

I ask all of you tolerant, fair-minded peace advocates, is it, perhaps, somewhat bigoted to impugn the merits and factual validity of a documentary based largely upon the ethnic heritage of the film maker?  Will “Obession” be welcomed at Arab film festivals to offer an “alternative perspective”?  Will all of you supporters of Rachel crusade for this cause next?  Please tell!

Should we all advocate for showing "Submission" at your local Arab film festival as well?

Would you be honored to fight tooth and nail to ensure that your upcoming local Arab or Muslim themed film festival would screen “Submission”?  Perhaps you may recall that its creator, the Dutch filmmaker, Theo van Gogh, was brutally assassinated on a public street after he dared to produce a short film critical of Islamic Sharia law.  Here’s how Wikipedia describes his gruesome fate:

Mohammed Bouyeri murdered Van Gogh in the early morning of 2 November 2004, in Amsterdam, in front of the Amsterdam East borough office (stadsdeelkantoor) on the corner of the Linnaeusstraat and Tweede Oosterparkstraat while he was bicycling to work.  Bouyeri shot van Gogh eight times with an HS 2000 handgun, and Van Gogh died on the spot. Bouyeri then cut Van Gogh’s throat, nearly decapitating him, and stabbed him in the chest. Two knives were left implanted in his torso, one attaching a five-page note to his body. The note (Text) threatened Western governments, Jews and Ayaan Hirsi Ali (who went into hiding). The note also contained references to the ideologies of the Egyptian organization Takfir wal-Hijra.

Surely, all of you dispassionate advocates of artistic free speech and the airing of “all sides of an issue” must have been up and arms and militating day and night to ensure that Submission has a place of honor in your upcoming Arab film festival.  No doubt you did.  Because, we all know that you are NOT duplicitious, insidious little bastards who masqerade as peace activists, but rather genuninely fairminded advocates of “peace, justice and equality for all peoples.”  I salute you all…

Too bad jagged ben and

Too bad jagged ben and grf don’t have the courage to use their real names so that the Jewish community can learn them for who they are, given the odious cause they represent.

Because they are “vocabulary challenged,” jagged ben and grf would find it beneficial to look up words they don’t have the capability to understand. “Sequester”: to remove or withdraw into safety. And sequester within their headquarters is precisely what ISM’ers did by keeping safe from Israeli armed forces the two Pakistanis of British citizenry who the very next day committed their murderous acts as suicide bombers and killers of Israeli citizens, acts the ISM has openly defended.

On the outside, no one can be certain whether or not the ISM “unwittingly” sequestered these butchers. But the fact that the two murderers sought out their known allies at ISM headquarters the day before they killed Israeli innocents speaks volumes…

If jagged ben wants to quote from a source to justify his contentions, then it would be reasonable for him to also concur with whatelse said source wrote about the suicide bombers and the ISM:

“The two terrorists were careful to establish their presence in Judea and Samaria by forging links with foreign left wing activists and members of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM).

“ISM members take an active part in illegal and violent actions against IDF soldiers. At times, their activity in Judea, Samaria and the Gaza Strip is under the auspices of Palestinian terrorist organizations.

“Foreign left wing activists, especially ISM members, who seek entry into Israel, often do so under false pretenses, via cover stories - entry for matrimonial, tourist, religious and otherr purposes - which they coordinate prior to arriving in Israel.”

Yes, this is the fine, “non-violent” organization for whom Saint Rachel worked and for whom Cindy Corrie shills.

As for the Paul LaRudee quote, it was right there in his blog until he realized it painted him and ISM in a negative light and he saw fit to remove it. But scores of us saw it and copied it for future reference.

Oh, and thanks to all the good folks from ISM and JVP Jews for “Palestine” writing in their usual herd mentality. When their comments don’t make one ill, their overt falsehoods lend mirth to serious subjects and in their comments to J, they have once again succeeded to amuse in fullest measure.

Back to you, Dan

From the Merriam-Webster online dictionary.

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/sequester

Sequester

1 a: to set apart : segregate <sequester a jury> b: seclude, withdraw <widely spaced homes are forbiddingly grand and sequestered — Don Asher>

2 a: to seize especially by a writ of sequestration b: to place (property) in custody especially in sequestration

3: to hold (as a metallic ion) in solution usually by inclusion in an appropriate coordination complex

Interesting that Dan first claims that ISM consciously provided sanctuary (the word he confuses for sequester) for the two terrorists then admits in the next paragraph that his claim is only guilt by association. His claim that ISM was or is “known allies” of terrorists appears to be based solely on the fact that the ISM opposes Israel’s actions in the OT and works primarily to protect Palestinians. I wish he might put his money where his mouth is and provide for us a verified statement by the ISM or JVP that defends and supports the use of terrorism by anyone.

And for the record I am not a member of either group.

As for his claims on the LaRudee quote, I am certain being the calm, considered researcher that he presents himself as, that he also can provide a link to the entire blog entry in question. For if scores “copied” it, they must have reproduced it somewhere - all of it, so that others might write Mr. LaRudee and ask him about it.

strangling the truth helps no one

There is something ugly and absurd in the battle against the truth conducted by some Jewish organizations and individuals. Particularly distasteful is a reversal by which those fighting unarmed against Israeli depredations are painted as the agressors.
Typical is your description of the occasion of Rachel’s death in Rafah as “an aggressive protest during which ISM members stood in front of Israeli bulldozers involved in home demolitions”  (editorial of July 24). Where was the agression, I ask, in the destruction of thousands of homes in Rafah? or in risking one’s life unarmed to try and stop a Palestinian family from becoming homeless, or at least to be a witness to Israeli brutality toward Palestinian civilians?
A Human Rights Watch report (“Razing Rafah”; October 2004) describes the demolition of thousands of homes in the absence of military necessity. Kenneth Roth, Executive Director of the Watch, stated: “The IDF has a series of sophisticated arguments to justify the destruction in Rafah. But these arguments crumble under scrutiny, revealing a pattern of unjustified abuse and destruction.”
Similarly, you claimed that ISM, a strictly nonviolent organization, called for the destruction of the Jewish state, which it never did. And you describe Rachel Corrie’s opinions as “repulsive” without mentioning a single word she said or wrote: no wonder, you would have had trouble finding anything but lucidity, compassion, and courage in her writings or statements to the press.
How long will mainstream Jewish organizations disgrace themselves by dismissing the findings of practically every human rights organization? Every lie prolongs the agony of Palestinians and the misery of the Israelis responsible for it.
