Ethel Hellman died Monday April 13, 2009 at home with her family.

She was the wife of David Hellman of blessed memory; she is survived by daughter Susan and daughter-in-law Sandy, daughter Patty and son-in law-Steve, daughter Joy, and grandchildren Andrea, Daniel and Micaela. She is the sister of Murray Staub and sister-in-law to Rhoda Staub, and aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Ethel was born on November 21, 1919 on Delancey Street in New York City. She married David in 1942 and taught elementary school. Together they moved to California in 1949.

Ethel spent her life taking care of her family and volunteering in the San Jose area. She was involved in Hadassah and, as one of the founding members of Congregation Sinai, helped to establish the Sinai Nursery School, worked on many Sisterhood projects, and served for years as the Sinai Sunday School principal. 

She joined her husband in the development of Willow Glen Villa and worked with him in management and sales.

Ethel volunteered at Booksin Elementary in the library and as a classroom tutor. She also volunteered at the San Jose Library and, for many years, at Hospice of the Valley.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 17, at 12:30p.m. at Los Gatos Memorial Park, 2255 Los Gatos-Almaden Rd., San Jose.

Lila Kaufmann

Beloved wife of Max of blessed memory, mother of Stuart, Larry and Pam, grandmother of Ascher, Talia and Elan, and sister of Bernice of blessed memory. Died April 4 at age 80 after a long struggle with myelodysplasia.

Funeral and shiva were held in N.J. Lila will be remembered for her warmth, optimism and determination. Donations in her memory may be made to St. Barnabas Infusion Center or Foundation Fighting Blindness. May her memory be for a blessing.

Sylvia (Burrows) Solk, 80 years old, longtime resident of Palo Alto, passed away Sunday April 5th. Loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Survived by husband of 58 years Sol Solk; children Phillip Solk (Rita), Natalie Dahling (Barry), and Marsha Beer (Jonathan); grandmother to Leah Solk, Michael Beer, Vanessa Marcotte, Matthew Beer, and Allison Dahling. Cherished sister to the Burrows family of Illinois of which she was the “baby” of 11 children.

An avid lover of all things beautiful and enjoyed working in her gardens at home. Sylvia and Sol shared many wonderful times and memories travelling the world visiting most countries. Adored by her grandchildren for endless hugs, kisses, and smiles.

Memorial service held at Temple Beth Am in Los Altos and burial at Hills of Eternity in Colma.

Memorial donations can be directed to the JCC (Jewish Community Center) of Palo Alto — Sr. Division, where Sylvia enjoyed many days meeting with friends.
