Doris T. Chives passed away peacefully at Kaiser Hospital in South San Francisco on Dec. 3, 2007.
A native of San Francisco and lived in Colma for 55 years while volunteering in local services for her community. Doris and her late husband, Emil Chives both started volunteering during WWII driving Red Cross ambulances. Doris volunteered at Kaiser Hospital in South San Francisco for 39 years and received the "Lifetime Achievement" award for over 25,000 hours of service and continued to volunteer until her passing. She also volunteered at the Daly City and San Francisco Kaisers. Doris was very instrumental in the implementation of the Second Harvest Food Bank and had been volunteering since 1991 with the South San Francisco Senior Centers. She had been involved with the credit union movement since 1940s and had just recently resigned from Sierra Point Credit Union. Doris also served as "Advisory Council President" for RSVP in 1993 and volunteered at the Janet Pomeroy Center in San Francisco.
Loving mother of Candy van Hemert and son-in-law Walter van Hemert; loving sister of William Teller and sister in law to Freda Teller; cherished grandmother to Shayna, Tiarah and Heather; great-grandmother of, Nicholas, Cody, Tyler and Johanna. Also survived by many family and friends and will be greatly missed by all.
Services were held Thursday Dec. 6, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at Temple Beth-Israel Judea on Brotherhood Way, San Francisco. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Doris T. Chivés name to the following charities: Janet Pomeroy Center, 207 Skyline Blvd., San Francisco 94132; South San Francisco Senior Services, 33 Arroyo Dr., South San Francisco, CA 94080; Kaiser Volunteer Services, 1200 El Camino Real, South San Francisco, CA 94080.
Robert Newman, M.D. at age 79 died in Burlingame while surrounded by his loving family and friends at Thanksgiving Dinner. "Uncle Bob" is survived by his brother, Donald Newman, M.D., his sister-in-law, Sora Lei Newman, his niece, Michelle Newman-Light and her husband, Adam, his nephews, Jon and Joel Newman, grandniece Ariel Light, grandnephews, Fabio Newman, Noah and Micha Light and his many cousins.
He was born to Aaron and Laura Newman and grew up in Maplewood New Jersey. The family moved to Los Angeles in 1945 where Bob attended UCLA undergraduate and Medical School. After serving in the Air Force as a physician in Japan he took orthopedic surgery training in Los Angeles. He set up his orthopedic practice in Redwood City. He traveled the world extensively and loved the symphony, ballet, opera and theatre.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Fromm Institute, the San Francisco Symphony, and the Wornick Jewish Day School in Foster City.
