A man of many hats
At the Jewish Home's annual meeting in October, Jim Koshland presented outgoing Board of Trustees chair David Friedman with a series of baseball caps, each representing the many hats he has worn during his last three years of leadership. Among the titles were capital fundraiser (he chaired the Home's fundraising effort for its new building), capital planner, director of the Taube-Koret Center for Jewish Life, earthquake engineer and, of course, chair of the Jewish Home board.
Also paying tribute to Friedman were Home residents Edie Sadewitz, Doug Goldman, Home CEO Daniel Ruth and Robert Friedman. Outgoing chair Friedman passed the gavel to his successor, Mark Myers, the third of three Home leaders who followed their dads into the top seat at the Home. Myers is the son of Larry Myers; Friedman is the son of Howard Friedman; and former chair Jim Davis is the son of Julian Davis.
Adult songs only
Janet Harris of Marin reports that she promised her son Coby Rudolph she wouldn't sing children's songs when he married Naomi Greisman last July. The reason: major teacher power. Harris is director of the S.F.-based Jewish Community Federation's Early Childhood Initiative and former Marin JCC Early Childhood Education Center director; Griesman is a teacher; and her mom, Mimi Greisman, is an early childhood educator. The couple met at U.C. Santa Cruz and are living in Washington, D.C., where Rudolph is director of outreach for Save Darfur. P.S. The bride's dad makes Irving's premium challahs.
Former State Senator Jackie Speier told 150 at Congregation Beth Am in Los Altos Hills earlier this month that her paternal grandfather was Jewish. He was imprisoned when the Holocaust began, but her non-Jewish grandmother "influenced" — as in bribed — someone to get him out, after which the family immediately left Germany. Speier talked about "This Is Not the Life I Ordered," the book she co-wrote with three other power women. The event raised $950 for Dream House, the transitional housing program for women and children at Jewish Family and Children's Services.

Rabbi Ted Feldman of B'nai Israel Jewish Center in Petaluma is providing spiritual counseling and rabbinic support for Cotati Congregation Ner Shalom while the temple transitions to a new rabbi.
Beverly Ripps of San Francisco had a fleeting "Oprah experience." She accompanied her daughter, who was invited to bring a guest and talk about Oprah's book of the month, "Love in the Time of Cholera." They weren't on the show, Ripps said, but "Marci spoke twice during the 'After the Show' book discussion, and my claim to fame was the back of my white head [and] purple jacket." Oprah really is "bigger-than-life," but also the kind of person you'd like to have coffee with, she adds.
